Chapter 7

I asked Vivian why bones.

Not food.

Not the council.

Bones.

She looked offended by the question.

“They were symbolic.”

Of course.

Cruelty loves symbolism.

“Explain.”

“Old Valenti women were taught not to waste.”

Elise laughed once.

No humor.

“You gave everyone else clean fish.”

Vivian ignored her.

I did not.

“That was not thrift.”

My mother’s expression hardened.

“It was discipline.”

“For what?”

“For believing pregnancy placed her above the family.”

There.

Again.

Rank.

“Did Elise say that?”

“No.”

“Then what did she do?”

“She expected special meals.”

I looked at Elise.

She stared in disbelief.

“I asked for food I could safely eat.”

My jaw clenched.

Vivian continued.

“She refused shellfish.”

“She’s pregnant.”

“She refused wine.”

“She’s pregnant.”

“She left dinners early.”

“She’s eight months pregnant.”

Every example collapsed the moment spoken plainly.

Vivian heard it too.

That made her angrier.

“She changed this house around herself.”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“Her body changed.”

Silence.

Then Vivian said:

“When I carried you, I never asked anyone to rearrange a table.”

Something shifted.

I stared.

There.

Not Nolan.

Not succession.

Older.

“What happened when you were pregnant with me?”

Her face closed.

“Nothing.”

Elise watched carefully.

I did too.

“Mother.”

She looked away.

My aunt Rose, who had been silent all night, finally spoke.

“Tell him.”

Vivian snapped:

“Be quiet.”

Rose shook her head.

“No.”

First rebellion.

Good.

She looked at me.

“Your grandmother did the same thing to Vivian.”

The room stopped.

“What?”

Rose’s eyes filled.

“She controlled her food. Made her finish scraps after family dinners. Locked rooms when she argued.”

I looked at the emergency key.

Vivian’s face turned pale.

Rose continued.

“She called it preparing a Valenti mother.”

I stared at my mother.

“You survived it.”

Her eyes hardened.

“Yes.”

“And decided that meant Elise should too.”

“It made me strong.”

“No.”

My voice stayed low.

“It taught you where to place the pain.”

That hit.

Vivian looked away.

Understanding where cruelty came from did not make it smaller.

May you like

It made the pattern older.

And gave us somewhere specific to end it.
