Chapter 16

Lucia met Vivian at nine months old.

Elise decided.

Not me.

Not Rose.

Not family pressure.

Elise.

The meeting happened in the garden.

No dining room.

No old symbols.

Vivian sat on a bench.

Lucia stared at her pearls.

Of course.

Babies respect only shiny objects.

Vivian looked at Elise.

“May I?”

Elise nodded.

Vivian held out one finger.

Lucia grabbed it immediately.

My mother started crying.

Lucia tried to eat the pearl bracelet next.

Emotional moment over.

Good.

Normality helps.

Vivian did not ask to hold her.

That impressed me more than tears.

After twenty minutes, Elise said:

“That’s enough.”

Vivian stood.

“Thank you.”

No bargaining.

No “but I’m her grandmother.”

Good.

Later, Elise and I ate dinner in the old private dining room.

Same table.

Different arrangement.

No six witnesses.

No emergency key.

Lucia sat in a high chair chewing something that barely qualified as food.

Elise looked beneath the table.

I noticed.

“What?”

“Nothing.”

I waited.

She smiled faintly.

“I was remembering.”

I reached for her hand.

Stopped before touching.

She reached first.

Another small rule.

Then a fish bone slipped from my own clean fillet.

I pulled it out and placed it on the side of the plate.

Elise stared.

For one second the room tightened.

Then Lucia threw a spoon.

It hit the floor.

We both laughed.

The tension broke.

May you like

Healing does not always arrive through serious conversation.

Sometimes a baby throws cutlery at exactly the right moment.
