Chapter 5

The silence stretching across the salon was absolute and apocalyptic. The fifty elite guests, capos, and relatives remained paralyzed on the burgundy velvet sofas, the festive Christmas reception completely obliterated by the exposure of such calculated, psychopathic cruelty.

Bianca’s eyes flicked nervously toward the watching guests, calculating the political damage of the moment. When her gaze returned to Adrian, her defensive smile hardened into a mask of pure, feral arrogance. She believed her status as the daughter of a powerful allied family made her completely immune to the consequences of her actions.

"I am establishing boundaries!" Bianca shrieked defensively, her diamond earrings swinging as she stepped forward. "The child is confused! She clings to this pathetic, disheveled creature instead of respecting her future stepmother! I had to assert dominance to remind the staff of their place! The animal is a nuisance!"

"Then buy another," Bianca stated, lifting her chin, attempting to project an aura of untouchable aristocratic authority. "This one sheds."

The sheer audacity of the confession, delivered in the presence of the mafia boss and his entire syndicate, was staggering. She hadn't denied the attempted murder of the animal; she had merely attempted to justify it as a necessary disciplinary measure, brushing off the psychological torture of a child as a mundane inconvenience.

"You attempted to freeze a defenseless animal to death because of your own pathetic, barren insecurities," Adrian stated with brutal, surgical precision. "You tortured a child out of sheer, petty spite."

"I am trying to build an empire with you!" Bianca screamed, tears of frustration ruining her flawless makeup. "You spend half your time indulging that girl! You are losing your edge! The other families are laughing at you! I took control because you were too weak to enforce the hierarchy yourself!"

Adrian did not yell. He did not explode into physical violence. The quiet, deep, controlled manner in which he operated was far more terrifying than any shouted threat. He moved with preternatural speed, stepping smoothly into the space to position his broad, masculine body deliberately between Elise and Bianca.

It was a physical shield, an unmistakable declaration of absolute protection that stripped away Bianca's authority in a single, fluid movement. He remained beside Elise, resting a reassuring, heavily tattooed hand on her shoulder, anchoring the trembling maid to his side.

Elise kept Bean nestled securely inside the linen, her breath hitching as she stared at the broad back of the man protecting her. Maisie stayed close beside Elise, watching Bean, her small hand clutching the black fabric of the maid's dress.

Adrian watched Bianca with a cold, unwavering stare. His sharp, angular jaw was set in stone.

"You have shown me," Adrian replied softly, his pitch-black eyes promising absolute ruin, "that you are a fatal liability."

Under the weight of that lethal, promising stare, Bianca’s defensive smile completely disappeared. The color drained from her face as she realized her meticulously crafted social standing had just been obliterated.
