Chapter 4

The opulent salon was suffocatingly quiet. The ivory candles burning in their ornate brass candelabras seemed to cast harsh, judgmental shadows over Bianca’s emerald satin gown. The polished, reassuring smile that usually charmed the syndicate members had begun to fracture, leaving behind the faint, terrifying cracks of cornered panic.

Adrian’s sharp, angular jaw was set in stone. The artistic negative-space tattoos on his hands flexed as he gripped the edge of the open silver lid. The tension in his broad shoulders coiled like a steel spring. The evening was no longer a celebration; it was a tribunal, and the apex predator of the city had just recognized a threat within his own walls.

"Elise," Adrian said, speaking quietly. His deep voice carried a lethal, apocalyptic authority that shook the very foundation of the room. He allowed a terrifying, measured pause to stretch out before finishing his command. "Who put it inside?"

The question hung in the bright, luminous air, demanding an answer that would dictate the survival of everyone standing near the drinks table. The entire syndicate was staring at the housemaid. Capos shifted uncomfortably on the burgundy velvet sofas. No one dared to breathe too loudly. The sheer, masculine power radiating from Adrian's frame promised absolute destruction if he was lied to.

Elise felt the crushing weight of fifty gazes, but the only eyes that mattered were the ones burning into hers. The mafia boss’s dark, intense stare was demanding absolute honesty. She knew that answering this question would either save her and the little girl she loved, or it would seal her own death warrant.

Elise cradled the kitten securely against her chest, the warmth of her own body slowly transferring to the shivering animal through the thick linen napkin. Tears gathered heavily along Elise’s lower eyelids, making her highly expressive eyes shine brilliantly in the golden light.

She met Adrian's gaze, refusing to look away, drawing on a well of courage she didn't know she possessed. Her fingers trembled violently around the edges of the linen napkin. She steadied a trembling breath, her chest rising and falling rapidly against her creased white apron.

"Bianca," Elise answered, her voice incredibly quiet, yet carrying a devastating, undeniable truth that sliced through the silent room. "For scratching her dress."

The devastating confession dropped onto the polished marble floor like toxic acid. A collective, audible gasp erupted from the surrounding guests. The murmurs of the elite syndicate members died instantly. The room was suddenly paralyzed. The woman destined to be the queen of the Crowne syndicate had just been publicly accused of attempting to orchestrate the freezing death of a helpless animal out of sheer, petty vanity.

"That is an outrageous lie!" Bianca shouted, stepping forward, her diamond earrings swinging wildly. The aristocratic polish was completely gone. "She is a lying whore trying to ruin our evening, Adrian! I have never touched that filthy animal! It must have climbed in there itself! She is trying to turn you against me to extort this family!"

"Do you expect me to accept the premise that a ten-week-old kitten engineered its own drowning by opening a heavy, latched silver chest?" Adrian asked, his deep voice effortlessly drowning out her frantic excuses.
