Chapter 16

A year after the magic show, Milo asked for a magician at his fifth birthday.

I almost said no.

Clara definitely said no.

Milo insisted.

“Real magic.”

Interesting.

We hired someone new.

No escape cabinet.

No trapdoor.

Cards.

Coins.

A rabbit.

Simple.

Before the show, Clara inspected the stage anyway.

The magician thought she was adorable.

I knew better.

She checked beneath the table.

Behind the curtains.

Then nodded.

Safe enough.

Milo sat front row.

During one trick, the magician asked for a volunteer.

Milo raised his hand.

My body tightened.

I let him go.

Choice.

The magician placed a soft hat on his head and made a silk scarf “appear” from his sleeve.

Milo screamed with laughter.

No cabinet.

No locked door.

No disappearing child.

Afterward, Teresa attended cake.

Lucia too.

Victor did not.

Milo had not invited him.

Fine.

Clara sat beside her brother.

Halfway through cake, she leaned toward me.

“I didn’t watch him the whole time.”

I looked at her.

“Good.”

She smiled.

“I watched some.”

“Also good.”

Healing did not need perfection.

Milo ran toward us wearing the magician’s oversized hat.

“Dad!”

“What?”

“Disappear me.”

Every adult froze.

He laughed.

“Joke!”

I exhaled.

Tiny criminal.

Clara shoved him.

He laughed harder.

A year earlier the word disappear meant terror.

Today he could make a joke.

That mattered.

May you like

Not because memory vanished.

Because memory no longer owned the word.
