Chapter 14

Teresa met Clara again after seven months.

Clara chose it.

Not Milo.

The distinction mattered.

They sat in the conservatory.

I remained outside.

Door open.

Teresa spoke first.

“I’m sorry.”

Clara stared.

“For?”

The children in this family were developing an excellent habit.

“For holding you.”

“And?”

“For telling you to lie.”

“And?”

Teresa swallowed.

“For helping them take Milo.”

Clara’s face tightened.

Good.

No euphemism.

“Why?”

Teresa looked toward the garden.

“Because I thought making him scared now would make him less scared later.”

Clara frowned.

“That makes no sense.”

I almost laughed.

Teresa actually smiled sadly.

“No.”

Then Clara asked:

“Would you do it again?”

Long silence.

The important question.

“No.”

“Because Dad hit Victor?”

Teresa looked surprised.

“No.”

“Because you got punished?”

“No.”

“Why?”

Teresa’s eyes filled.

“Because I heard Milo ask whether everyone was going to leave him in the box.”

Clara looked away.

That was new.

Milo had said it after I carried him from the stage.

Teresa heard.

Apparently the sentence followed her.

Good.

Not shame as punishment.

Memory as correction.

Clara nodded.

Then:

“I don’t forgive you yet.”

Teresa whispered:

“Okay.”

That was progress.

No demand.

No “but family.”

No tears used as leverage.

Clara stood.

Meeting over.

At the door she turned.

“You can come to my school thing.”

Teresa’s face changed.

“Really?”

“Yes.”

“Milo?”

“No.”

Clear.

One relationship reopening without dragging another with it.

Our family had never been good at that.

We were learning.
