Chapter 9

The sleek, heavily armored black SUV sped smoothly away from the equestrian club, leaving the manicured grounds of Connecticut behind as it merged onto the private highway heading back toward the city. Inside the soundproofed cabin, the atmosphere was thick and silent.

Zoe was completely exhausted by the terror of the afternoon. She was curled comfortably in the plush leather seat beside Elijah, her small head resting on his lap. She had fallen into a deep, peaceful sleep, her breathing steady and quiet. Elijah sat perfectly still, his large hand gently resting on her back, feeling the rhythmic rise and fall of her chest.

Across from them sat Jamal. The teenager stared out the tinted window, the adrenaline from the fight finally beginning to recede from his system. He looked down at his own hands, analyzing the brief violence he had engaged in against trained security men.

"You moved well today, Jamal," Elijah said quietly, breaking the heavy silence without raising his voice. He didn't look away from his sleeping daughter. "Your balance was perfect. You didn't overcommit to the strike. Who taught you that redirection?"

Jamal turned away from the window, sitting up slightly straighter under the unexpected praise. "Marcus, sir. He’s been working with me in the gym down at the docks. He says brute force is useless if you don't control the center of gravity."

"Marcus is a wise man," Elijah nodded slowly, the artistic tattoos on his neck flexing slightly as he tilted his head. "And he is right. Power is nothing without control. Preston had a gun in his holster today, but he was too terrified to draw it. He relied entirely on the men he paid to protect him. When they fell, he was nothing but a coward in expensive clothes."

"Why did he do it, Uncle Elijah?" Jamal asked, a deep frown creasing his warm bronze forehead. "Why would he sell Zoe out to the Feds? He has everything. You gave him the Southside distribution lines. He was making millions."

"Because greed is a disease, Jamal, and fear is its catalyst," Elijah explained smoothly, his cold, intimidating eyes reflecting the passing highway lights. "The federal agents didn't corner Preston with evidence of his crimes; they cornered him with the threat of losing his lifestyle. They squeezed him, and instead of standing tall and facing the consequences like a man of this family, he tried to buy his freedom with my daughter's life."

"What happens to him now?" Jamal asked, his voice dropping to a whisper.

"Preston no longer exists," Elijah stated with absolute, chilling finality. "His name will not be spoken in our houses. His accounts will be frozen, and his assets will be seized and distributed to the families of the men who stay loyal. Treason cannot simply be punished; it must be eradicated so completely that the thought of betrayal terrifies the boldest men in my organization."

Jamal swallowed hard, fully comprehending the ruthless reality of the empire his uncle ruled.

The encrypted phone built into the console of the SUV suddenly chimed softly, a single, sharp note indicating a high-priority, secure communication.

Elijah didn't flinch. He carefully moved his hand from Zoe’s back and tapped the glowing blue button on the touchscreen. The digital connection hissed slightly before a heavily synthesized voice filled the cabin.

"Elijah Ashford," the voice stated flatly. "This is Special Agent Vance, FBI Organized Crime Division. We know you have Preston. We are tracking his vehicle."

Elijah’s expression remained perfectly carved from stone. He didn't lean forward. He didn't raise his voice. He simply stared at the speaker grille, his deep mahogany skin illuminated by the dashboard lights.

"You are tracking a ghost, Agent Vance," Elijah replied, his voice a low, lethal hum that promised absolute destruction. "If you ever place a device on a member of my bloodline again, I won't just kill your informants. I will burn your entire field office to the ground with you inside it."

Before the agent could respond, Elijah terminated the connection with a single tap.
