Chapter 8

The finality of Elijah's words hung in the sterile air of the medical room, a definitive death sentence delivered without a single raised decibel. Preston collapsed entirely, burying his face in his hands as loud, ragged sobs tore from his throat. He knew begging was useless now. Elijah Ashford never issued empty threats, and he never forgave treason.

Elijah stood back up, adjusting the cuffs of his custom-tailored navy equestrian blazer with terrifying, calm precision. He didn't look at Preston again. The traitor was already a ghost to him.

He turned his attention back to Jamal, who was still standing defensively near the door, his chest heaving slightly from the brief combat.

"Jamal," Elijah commanded softly.

"Yes, Uncle Elijah," the teenager responded immediately, standing up straight, his hands falling to his sides.

"You did well today. You protected your blood," Elijah praised, a rare, genuine note of respect entering his cold voice. He gestured toward the two unconscious security men lying amidst the wreckage of the helmets and saddles. "Call my personal detail. Have them clear this room. They know what to do with the trash."

"Understood," Jamal nodded firmly, pulling a sleek, encrypted cell phone from the pocket of his tan riding trousers and immediately walking out into the corridor to make the call.

Elijah turned his attention to Dr. Olivia, who was currently wrapping Zoe’s scratched leg in soft, sterile bandages. The doctor was pale and visibly trembling, trying desperately to focus entirely on her young patient and ignore the lethal Mafia boss standing over her shoulder.

"Is she alright, Doctor?" Elijah asked, his voice returning to the quiet, controlled cadence he used for business.

"Yes, Mr. Ashford," Dr. Olivia replied quickly, not daring to meet his intimidating eyes. "The scratches are superficial. I've cleaned the wounds and applied an antibiotic ointment. She will be sore for a few days, but there will be no permanent scarring. She’s just... very frightened."

"Thank you, Doctor," Elijah said smoothly. He reached out and gently stroked Zoe's cheek. The little girl leaned into his tattooed hand, seeking comfort. "You will be generously compensated for your discretion regarding the events of this afternoon. I trust you understand the importance of doctor-patient confidentiality."

"Absolutely, sir. I saw nothing but a riding accident," Dr. Olivia stammered, finishing the bandage and quickly packing her medical supplies into a sterile bag.

"Good," Elijah nodded. He gently scooped Zoe up into his arms. The little girl immediately buried her face into the crook of his neck, her tiny arms wrapping securely around the collar of his pristine white shirt. He rested his large, tattooed hand protectively against her back.

He turned toward the door just as four heavily armed men in dark suits entered the medical room, moving with silent, terrifying efficiency. They didn't ask questions. Two of them immediately grabbed Preston by the arms, hauling the sobbing, broken man to his feet, while the others moved to drag the unconscious security guards out of the wreckage.

Elijah didn't watch them work. He carried his daughter out into the bright, sunlit corridor of the equestrian club.

"Daddy," Zoe whispered against his neck as they walked, her voice still trembling slightly. "Are the bad men gone?"

"They are gone, Zoe," Elijah murmured softly, pressing a kiss to her forehead. "And they are never, ever coming back."

He walked past the opulent reception area of the club, completely ignoring the terrified stares of the wealthy patrons. Nobody dared to make eye contact with the boss.

Elijah stepped out through the grand double doors into the crisp Connecticut afternoon air, his sleek black SUV already waiting at the curb with the engine running. The immediate threat was neutralized, but the war had just been declared.
