Chapter 3

Jamal’s training kicked in automatically. He ducked smoothly, fluidly blocking the second man’s wild swing with his forearm. Without pausing to reset his balance, Jamal pivoted on his leather paddock boots, using the attacker's own momentum against him. Jamal shoved both of his hands squarely into the man's chest and sent him flying backward with a powerful, explosive thrust.

The security man stumbled backward, completely losing his footing on the polished clinical tile. His arms flailed as he crashed violently back-first into the tall, padded helmet cubbies lining the wall.

The heavy wooden structure shuddered violently under the impact. Expensive equestrian helmet boxes tumbled from the upper shelves, raining down upon the man's shoulders. Thick foam fitting pads and custom sizing inserts scattered chaotically across the floor, bouncing off the rolling orthotic carts. The man collapsed heavily onto the floor, groaning amidst the scattered padding and crushed cardboard.

Before Sterling could recover and launch a secondary assault on the teenager, the heavy, soundproofed clinic doors swung open.

The noise of the scuffle seemed to instantly evaporate, sucked entirely out of the room by the sheer, overwhelming presence of the man who had just crossed the threshold.

It was Elijah.

At thirty-one, Elijah was the absolute, terrifying pinnacle of the syndicate's power. He was an incredibly handsome Black American man, boasting rich, deep mahogany-toned skin, an angular face, a high-bridged nose, and a sharply defined jawline shadowed by extremely short, neatly trimmed stubble. His eyes were cold, sharp, and intimidating—the eyes of a predator accustomed to absolute obedience.

Artistic tattoos crept up his neck and decorated his hands and fingers. They were refined, sharp designs utilizing negative space perfectly, so they didn’t look dense or messy. The neck tattoos were moderate and neatly placed, just enough to create an incredibly attractive, yet undeniably dangerous aesthetic without entirely covering his throat.

Elijah was dressed impeccably, wearing a custom-tailored navy equestrian blazer, a crisp white shirt unbuttoned at the chest to reveal a faint glimpse of ink, beige breeches, and polished tall leather riding boots that clicked ominously against the tile.

He stopped just inside the doorway. His sharp, calculating eyes instantly assessed the room. He saw the fallen security man among the scattered helmet boxes. He saw Jamal standing in a defensive fighting stance. He saw Dr. Olivia holding the blunt trauma shears.

And then, his cold eyes locked onto Preston, who was currently reaching his hands out toward a sobbing, terrified Zoe.

There was no dialogue. Elijah didn't scream, and he didn't demand an explanation. The absolute, lethal silence he projected was infinitely more terrifying than any shout. The temperature in the room plummeted.

Preston froze, his hands hovering inches from Zoe’s small shoulders. He turned his head slowly, locking eyes with his younger cousin, and the color drained completely from his fair, rosy skin. He knew immediately that he had crossed a boundary from which there was no return.
