Chapter 1

The private medical room inside the sprawling, Mafia-owned equestrian club in Connecticut was designed with a sterile, terrifying elegance. Sunlight filtered through the frosted glass windows, casting a natural, cinematic glow without a trace of artificial yellow tint. The room was a bizarre juxtaposition of equestrian tradition and clinical efficiency. Riding-boot fitting racks lined the walls, stacked high with empty boot forms and expensive leather. Padded helmet cubbies sat beside rolling orthotic carts loaded with foam leg molds and precision measuring tools. Saddle-pad shelves and heavy equipment cases rested near padded leather examination benches. It was a room where the elite members of the syndicate brought their prized horses—and sometimes their prized people—to be mended away from the prying eyes of public hospitals.

Sitting on the edge of the central padded bench was three-year-old Zoe. She was undeniably adorable, with soft, glowing golden-brown skin and large, terrified eyes. She wore a miniature tweed riding jacket, cream jodhpurs, and tall glossy black rubber riding boots that were currently the source of her absolute panic.

Dr. Olivia, the thirty-eight-year-old private-club physician, knelt before the little girl. Dr. Olivia possessed fair, rosy skin and maintained a crisp, professional demeanor, dressed in navy blue medical scrubs, sterile gloves, and protective glasses. She held a heavy pair of blunt trauma shears in her right hand, carefully positioning the lower blade against the thick rubber edge of Zoe’s right boot.

Zoe gripped both of the boot handles with tiny, trembling fingers. She was shaking violently, her small chest heaving as tears streamed silently down her face.

"Daddy… something keeps moving inside my boot," Zoe whispered, her voice cracking with pure, unadulterated terror. "It's scratching me."

"I know, sweetheart. I'm going to get it out right now," Dr. Olivia said softly, adjusting her grip on the heavy shears. "Just hold very still for me."

Dr. Olivia began to slide the blunt trauma shears beneath Zoe’s rubber boot, preparing to slice the thick material open from the top down.

Before the blades could even engage, Preston stepped forward with a sudden, violent burst of aggression.

Preston was forty-two, a White American man with fair, rosy skin who served as Elijah’s cousin and a high-ranking Mafia associate. He dressed impeccably for the country club setting, wearing an expensive tailored tweed hunting jacket, a silk cravat tucked neatly into his collar, tailored riding breeches, a luxury wristwatch, and pristine leather riding boots. But his sophisticated appearance completely belied the sudden, frantic panic burning in his eyes.

With a swift, aggressive motion, Preston lunged forward and forcefully grabbed Dr. Olivia’s wrist, his fingers digging into the fabric of her sterile gloves.

"Stop right there," Preston demanded, his voice tight and completely lacking the refined manners expected in the club. He squeezed the doctor's wrist hard enough to make her wince, halting the shears mere millimeters from the rubber boot. "You aren't cutting that open."

"Let go of me," Dr. Olivia warned, trying to pull her arm back. "There is a foreign object trapped against the child's leg."

"I said no," Preston sneered, his grip tightening as he physically tried to pull the doctor away from the bench.
