Chapter 7

A sudden, sharp series of vibrations rattled the leaded glass windows of the ballroom.

From the long driveway outside the pavilion, the sound of heavy diesel engines cut through the silence. Flashing emergency lights—not the blue and red of municipal police, but the harsh, pulsing amber and white of federal convoy units—cast jagged patterns across the high ceiling.

Senator Montgomery Vane’s head snapped up. A desperate, triumphant sneer broke across his pale, aristocratic face.

"They're here," the Senator breathed, laughing with ragged relief. "They're finally here! You waited too long, Ronan! You thought you could run this kangaroo court in the middle of my daughter's gala? The raid was scheduled for nine o'clock! The Strike Force has warrants for the entire Crestwell transport syndicate!"

Sybil let out a manic, hysterical laugh from the floor, scrambling back to her feet, brushing the dust from her designer gown. "You're done, old man! You're going to die in a federal penitentiary in Colorado! Dacre made the deal three weeks ago! Full immunity for him, full immunity for the Vane Trust, in exchange for the private ledgers in your safe!"

Ronan did not flinch. His heart rate did not climb by a single beat. He looked at Dacre, who was staring at the floor, unable to meet his father’s eyes.

"Is this the plan, Dacre?" Ronan asked calmly. "You thought you would trade the family books to buy a seat in the Senate?"

"They had me boxed in, Dad!" Dacre yelled, his voice cracking into shrill desperation. "The feds found the shipping manifests from the southern docks! They knew about the cargo containers from Cartagena! Julian said if I didn't cooperate, they would indict me as the primary operator! I had to save myself!"

"You had to save yourself," Ronan repeated.

The heavy double oak doors at the main entrance were flung open with concussive force.

A dozen men in dark tactical windbreakers and body armor poured into the grand foyer, their boots thudding against the marble. At their head walked a tall, lean man of fifty with silver-rimmed glasses and a federal badge pinned to his lapel: Special Agent Marcus Vance, director of the regional Organized Crime Task Force.

Senator Vane stepped forward, his chest swelling with authority. "Agent Vance! Thank God you're on schedule! Arrest Ronan Crestwell immediately! He has assaulted my daughter and he is holding this room under armed coercion!"

Agent Vance walked directly past the Senator.

He did not look at Ronan. He did not look at the armed Crestwell enforcers lining the perimeter.

Agent Vance stopped three feet from Dacre Crestwell, pulled a crisp, blue-backed legal document from his leather portfolio, and unfolded it with a sharp snap of paper.

"Dacre Crestwell," Agent Vance said, his American accent flat and clinical. "You are under arrest for the aggravated murder of Clara Higgins, conspiracy to commit interstate kidnapping, and evidence tampering."
