Chapter 6

The close-up held on Ronan’s face. His cold, observant eyes lingered on Micah for a brief, heartbreaking moment. He absorbed the sheer trauma radiating from his son, the innocent child who had been forced to carry the crushing weight of his mother's murder in silence, terrorized by the very woman who had taken her life. The rigid lines of his angular face softened by a fraction of a millimeter toward the boy, a silent promise of absolute, uncompromising protection.
Then, his eyes slowly shifted.
His head followed slightly as his gaze moved across the gold-rimmed porcelain and crystal stemware, locking directly onto Beatrice. His jaw tightened almost imperceptibly, the muscles flexing beneath his extremely short stubble. His lips became perfectly still.
He fixed her with a cold, unwavering stare and said nothing.
The end of the visual prompt suspended the room in this agonizing, freezing silence. The bright, luminous colors of the dining hall felt like a harsh interrogation spotlight, offering Beatrice absolutely no place to hide.
"Ronan, he is lying!" Beatrice shrieked, her voice pitching up into a hysterical, defensive frequency. She pointed a shaking, diamond-clad finger at the little boy. "He is a traumatized child! His mind is combining memories! He doesn't know what he is saying! I wasn't even near the stairs when she fell!"
"Is it customary for a grieving child to invent the specific mechanics of a murder to slander his father's oldest friend?" Ronan finally asked.
His deep, low voice rolled through the quiet room, the measured pauses striking like the heavy toll of a funeral bell.
"He is confused!" Beatrice cried, tears of panic and frustration finally spilling over her fair cheeks, ruining her pristine makeup. "She slipped! The coroner ruled it an accident! You saw the report yourself! I loved her! I loved her like a sister!"
"Does love require a woman to orchestrate an execution and terrorize the only witness?" Ronan inquired, his cold, perceptive eyes dissecting her false narrative with surgical precision.
"You can't believe him!" Beatrice insisted, her chest heaving beneath the sculpted satin of her evening gown. "The maid put him up to this! They conspired to ruin this dinner to make me look like a monster in front of your friends! They want me out of this house!"
"Do you believe my son is a puppet, manipulated by a woman whose only crime is showing him the warmth you inherently lack?" Ronan asked smoothly.
He didn't wait for her pathetic, scrambling answer. He took a slow, deliberate step toward the center of the table. The refined artistic tattoos on his hands flexed as he rested his palms on the polished walnut wood.

"Did you truly believe you could bury my wife, terrorize my heir, and seamlessly ascend to my side without consequence?" Ronan questioned, his voice dropping into a register of pure, concentrated ice.
Beatrice opened her mouth, her breath catching audibly in the quiet room. She looked at the towering, deeply masculine Mafia boss, realizing that the formidable intellect she had so arrogantly underestimated had just trapped her perfectly. The trap had been sprung, and there was no escape.
