Chapter 4

The medium wide shot framed the immediate, terrifying fallout of Della’s softly spoken confession. The bright, airy colors of the dining hall felt suddenly charged with an explosive, high-voltage tension. The clean whites of the table linens and the polished highlights of the silver cutlery shimmered beneath the warm golden light, a stark contrast to the dark reality of the confrontation.

A collective, stifled gasp rippled through the gathered relatives and associates. To state that the bride-to-be had physically assaulted a servant in the shadows of the mansion was a horrifying revelation that disturbed even the hardened criminals sitting at the table.

Beatrice’s fair, rosy skin drained of color. Her eyes widened in sheer, unadulterated panic. She realized the narrative was slipping rapidly from her manicured grasp.

Before Beatrice could open her mouth to shriek a denial, Ronan moved.

He did not rush, nor did he display any outward sign of explosive anger. He simply stepped sideways with a fluid, terrifying masculine grace. His broad, powerful shoulders shifted beneath the tailored dark three-piece suit. In one deliberate, protective motion, Ronan placed his towering frame entirely between Beatrice and both Della and his son, Micah.

He acted as an impenetrable wall, physically shielding the fragile housemaid and the young boy from his furious fiancée.

Beatrice swallowed hard, sinking her manicured nails into the palms of her hands. She forced herself to meet Ronan’s cold, observant eyes. She desperately attempted a patient, reassuring smile, projecting an aura of complete, unbothered calm.

“She upset your son.”

Beatrice’s voice remained carefully composed, carrying a smooth, casually certain tone. She delivered the words as though the explanation should entirely excuse her violence. Her eyes were intensely watchful, carefully tracking his sharply defined expression for any sign of acceptance.

Ronan did not smile back. The extremely short stubble on his jawline seemed to harden into absolute granite.

"Does a child's momentary distress warrant the brutalization of the woman tasked with his care?" Ronan asked. His deep, low voice rolled through the quiet room, the measured pauses striking like a physical blow.

Beatrice’s smile tightened slightly at the corners, but she maintained her posture. "Ronan, darling, please. The maid is being dramatic. She was overstepping her boundaries with Micah. I simply guided her out of the way, and she stumbled. It was a harmless correction to keep order in the household."

"Is it customary for harmless corrections to leave my staff bruised and weeping at my dinner table?" Ronan inquired, his cold, perceptive eyes dissecting her false narrative with surgical precision.

"She is just trying to cause trouble!" Beatrice insisted, her voice lowering slightly, attempting to manage the situation before it escalated into a public spectacle. "You know how attached Micah has become to her since his mother passed. The maid encourages it inappropriately. I simply wanted to establish some healthy boundaries."

"Do healthy boundaries require the use of physical force against a defenseless woman?" Ronan questioned, his gaze remaining entirely unyielding.
