Chapter 3

The silence in the grand dining room was a physical, suffocating pressure. The tall candles flickering inside their silver candelabras seemed to be the only things moving. The bright, luminous colors of the room felt painfully sharp, illuminating the exact moment the polished illusion of the Voss empire began to violently unravel.
Sterling’s expression remained an unreadable mask of masculine stone. He stood immovably in his tailored charcoal three-piece suit, his towering frame casting a dark, protective shadow over both the housemaid and his young son. He did not immediately speak. He let the deafening silence stretch, allowing the sheer magnitude of his son's revelation to settle over the fifty elite guests.
Clarissa gripped the edge of the polished walnut table, her diamond engagement ring catching the light as her hand began to shake. She opened her mouth to speak, to scream a denial, to call the child a liar, but her vocal cords were paralyzed by the sheer, overwhelming terror radiating from the man standing opposite her.
"Are you struggling to find a suitable lie, Clarissa?" Sterling finally asked.
His deep, low voice remained completely level. The measured pause between his words was a calculated instrument of psychological torture. He did not step toward her, but the sheer gravity of his presence pressed her against the wall.
"Sterling, darling, please," Clarissa gasped, her American accent pitching high and breathless with panic. "He is just a child! He misunderstood! I was trying to teach her a lesson about respecting our property! She broke a crystal glass! I didn't mean any harm!"
"Does a lesson in respect require the suffocation of a woman in my employ?" Sterling inquired, his perceptive eyes narrowing into cold slits.
"She was faking it!" Clarissa cried, tears of sheer desperation welling in her eyes. She pointed a shaking, diamond-adorned finger at the housemaid. "She has been trying to manipulate you since the day I moved in! She wants to ruin our evening!"
Delia lowered the inhaler, her chest rising and falling more evenly now. She leaned heavily against the table, still weak, but she glared at the socialite, her soft features hardening with quiet outrage. Peter shrank back slightly in his velvet chair, overwhelmed by the shouting, but Sterling’s solid, unmoving presence kept him anchored.
"Would my son fabricate a narrative to destroy the foundation of this family?" Sterling asked, his voice echoing off the ivory-paneled walls.
"Yes!" Clarissa shrieked, looking frantically around the room at the seated guests, silently begging someone—anyone—to intervene. But the elite crowd sat immobilized, their fair faces pale with shock, utterly unwilling to cross the mafia boss.
Sterling slowly swept his cold, observant gaze across the room, taking in the numerous guests sitting frozen at their white damask tables.
"Have you all finished your meals?" Sterling asked the room at large.

It was phrased as a question, but the command hidden within it was unmistakable and absolute. Chairs scraped violently against the polished hardwood floors as the guests practically scrambled to their feet. There were no polite farewells, no lingering handshakes. Men in tailored suits and women in evening gowns fled the bright, elegant room with frantic urgency, eager to escape the blast radius of Sterling Voss’s wrath.
Within moments, the grand dining hall was entirely empty, save for the four figures standing near the head table. The heavy mahogany doors slammed shut, sealing the room and locking Clarissa inside with her greatest nightmare.
