Chapter 1

The cascading crystal chandeliers suspended from the high ceiling of the mansion cast a brilliantly warm, golden light across the grand dining hall. It was a space designed to impress and intimidate, walled with ivory panels and anchored by a magnificently carved marble fireplace that roared with a controlled, elegant blaze. Gilded ceiling moldings caught the luminous illumination, reflecting an airy warmth over the fifty guests assembled below. They were the city’s elite—wealthy politicians, syndicate lieutenants, and socialites—all possessing fair, rosy skin and polished American accents. Tall ivory candles flickered gently inside heavy silver candelabras, their dancing reflections shimmering across polished walnut tables dressed in pristine white damask. Crystal stemware clinked against fine porcelain, harmonizing with the low, sophisticated murmur of the crowded engagement dinner.
At the head of the room stood Sterling Voss. He was a mafia boss of terrifying repute, yet he possessed the movie-star handsome features of a classical statue. His powerful, broad shoulders filled out a tailored charcoal three-piece suit to absolute perfection. He had an angular face, a high-bridged nose, and a sharply defined jawline shadowed by extremely short, neatly trimmed stubble. His thick, slightly wavy hair was naturally swept back, with just a few loose strands falling carelessly over his fair forehead. Refined artistic tattoos graced his hands and fingers, utilizing generous negative space to remain elegantly subtle, while a small, intricate tattoo peeked from the collar of his crisp white shirt. He surveyed the room with cold, perceptive eyes, his heavy family signet ring and polished wristwatch gleaming as he stood silently beside a velvet dining chair.
To his right stood Clarissa Vale, his thirty-three-year-old fiancée. She was draped in a sculpted satin evening gown that clung perfectly to her slender frame. Diamond earrings flashed in the candlelight, matching the heavy engagement ring on her finger. She offered a warm, composed, and reassuring smile to the passing guests, masking the treacherous, venomous cruelty that simmered just beneath her beautiful, rosy surface.
"The evening is an absolute triumph, isn't it, Senator?" Clarissa asked a guest seated nearby, her smile perfectly practiced. "Sterling and I are simply thrilled to have our closest friends here to celebrate our future."
"It is a magnificent event, Clarissa," the senator replied, raising his crystal glass. "The Voss and Vale families uniting will bring unprecedented peace to this city."
Sterling stared at his crystal glass, his face an unreadable mask. He turned his head slightly, his deep, low voice vibrating through the space. "Do you believe peace is ever truly bought with champagne, Senator?"
The politician chuckled nervously at the mafia boss's question, taking a quick sip of his wine.

Moving gracefully among the velvet chairs was Delia Hart. The twenty-seven-year-old housemaid was breathtakingly beautiful, possessing a softly oval face, expressive brows, and delicate cheekbones that flushed with a natural, rosy warmth. Her hair was arranged in a neat, low twist. Her slender, graceful proportions were highlighted by a sophisticated black maid dress with a cinched waist, a fitted silhouette, and a short A-line skirt. A neatly tied white apron, white collar, and matching cuffs completed her immaculate uniform.
But beneath her polished exterior, Delia was suffocating. Her chest was tight, her lungs burning for air that simply would not come. An hour earlier, a dropped glass had sent Clarissa into a quiet, vindictive rage, resulting in the confiscation of Delia's prescribed asthma inhaler. Now, carrying a heavy crystal water pitcher, Delia’s breathing was becoming a shallow, desperate rasp, her vision swimming in the warm golden light.
