Chapter 1

The conservatory dining hall of the Ashenford estate was flooded with brilliant, luminous afternoon light. Washed in clean whites and delicate golden warmth, the air felt polished and airy, unmarred by heavy shadows or amber haze. Beneath crystal chandeliers that caught the clean white balance of the sun, thirty guests in tailored evening attire sat along a thirty-foot banquet table of bleached oak. Laughter and the delicate clinking of silverware echoed over fresh floral arrangements, celebrating the formal engagement of Torin Ashenford to Davina.

At the far end of the long table sat seventy-six-year-old Elspeth Ashenford. Dressed in a modest lavender dress, an ivory knit cardigan, and pearl earrings, her fair, rosy cheeks were touched with the fragile innocence of her advancing years. Beside her stood twenty-four-year-old Nella Wrenley, wearing a fitted black maid dress, a crisp white apron, and a delicate white lace headband. Nella watched over the matriarch with constant, gentle vigilance.

Davina, thirty-five, sat two seats down in an emerald evening gown, her seven-carat engagement ring flashing beneath the bright light. Her painted lips tightened into an expression of sharp, venomous contempt as she looked at the elderly woman.

Without warning, Davina reached across the linen runner and tipped Elspeth’s porcelain dinner plate directly onto the floor.

The plate shattered against the white marble. Roasted chicken, glazed carrots, and wild rice scattered beneath Elspeth’s comfortable shoes. Several guests gasped, but their voices quickly withered into silence as they caught the haughty glare in Davina's eyes.

Elspeth flinched, her frail hands trembling in her lap. Seeing the old woman’s distress, Nella stepped forward immediately. From a silver basket on the table, the maid lifted a warm, crusty bread roll, offering it gently toward Elspeth’s shaking fingers.

Before the bread could touch the matriarch's palm, Davina lunged out of her seat.

Her palm cracked across Nella’s cheek with a sharp, brutal snap.

The force of the strike sent Nella recoiling two paces against the sideboard, her white lace headband slipping slightly against her fair hair. Yet despite the fiery red mark blooming across her rosy skin, Nella refused to drop the bread, clutching the roll against her apron with white knuckles.

Davina leaned in, her red lips parting into a poisonous, theatrical smile aimed at the watching guests.

“Feed her again,” Davina hissed through her teeth, “and you both starve.”

Nella lowered her gaze, pressing her trembling lips together to stifle a sob. The dining room fell into a suffocating, breathless hush.

Then, the heavy sound of polished leather shoes clicking across marble cut through the room.

Torin Ashenford rose from the head of the table. At forty-five, he moved with the devastating, quiet magnetism of a screen idol. His thick, slightly wavy hair was slicked back with a few romantic, careless strands falling across his brow. His face was an architecture of severe angles—a high-bridged nose, razor-sharp jawline, and neatly trimmed stubble. Over his dark, bespoke three-piece suit, his physical authority felt ancient and unyielding. Refined, artistic tattoos coiled across his knuckles and along the side of his throat, leaving elegant negative space against his skin.

Torin stepped directly beside Nella. He did not look at the shattered food. With slow, deliberate grace, he lifted the entire silver bread basket from the table and set it squarely in front of his mother.

Only then did he turn his slate-gray eyes upon the maid.

“Nella,” Torin said. His voice was a deep, raspy whisper, separated by slow, measured pauses that made the room drop ten degrees. “Why... is my mother... being punished?”
