Chapter 1

The bright pendant lights over the kitchen island hummed with sterile warmth, casting sharp reflections across the white marble. Without warning, David lunged forward, his face flushed a furious, mottled red. His hands slammed into Sarah’s shoulders with savage momentum, violently shoving her backward.
Sarah’s breath exploded from her lungs as her lower back slammed against the marble edge of the island. The impact threw her off balance; her feet slid across the polished hardwood, and she collapsed violently to the floor. Her right leg caught beneath the heavy weight of her falling body with a sickening, audible crack. Blinding, white-hot agony tore through her knee and shin, forcing a choked scream from her throat as she crumpled onto her side, her silk satin blouse twisting beneath her chest.
A few yards away, four-year-old Emma screamed in pure, unadulterated terror. The little girl stood barefoot in her pastel pajamas, her rosy cheeks soaked with tears, trembling so violently she could barely keep her balance.
David didn't spare their daughter a single glance. He loomed over Sarah, his expensive dress shirt straining across his shoulders, his silk tie loosened and crooked. His face twisted with raw, vicious rage.
“Tell everyone you slipped,” David hissed, his American accent clipped, low, and venomous.
Sarah gasped for air, tears of sheer agony springing to her eyes as she clutched her twisted, visibly broken right leg. “David... please...”
Beside the arched doorway, Margaret Bennett stood completely motionless. She held a crystal glass of red wine in one manicured hand, her pearls gleaming against her beige top. She looked down at Sarah with cold, satisfied contempt, taking a calm, deliberate sip of her drink.
“Look what you brought upon yourself,” Margaret said, her voice smooth and devoid of human warmth. “Always causing a scene, Sarah. Always making things difficult for my son.”
“Mom, stay out of this,” David snapped over his shoulder, his eyes never leaving his wife. “Get up, Sarah. Get up right now and fix your face before someone sees you.”
“I can’t move,” Sarah wheezed, her fingernails digging into the floorboards as waves of nausea washed over her. “You broke it... you broke my leg...”
“You fell because you’re clumsy!” David barked, stepping closer, the toe of his leather dress shoe nudging her ribs. “Do you hear me? You slipped on the floor! Say it!”
Sarah didn't answer him. Fighting through the blinding pain that threatened to drag her into blackness, she turned her head toward the hallway arch. She locked eyes with Emma. The little girl was weeping silently, her tiny hands clenched into balls against her pajamas.
Sarah took a ragged, agonizing breath. Keeping her hand low against the floorboards where David’s towering frame blocked his line of sight, she raised four fingers. Exactly four.
Emma’s breath hitched. Her tear-streaked face suddenly hardened with sudden, desperate recognition.
Before David could turn around, Emma spun on her bare feet and bolted down the hall toward the mounted emergency console.
“Emma! Stop right there!” David roared, spinning around in disbelief.
Emma leaped, slamming her small palm directly onto the illuminated red emergency button on the wall. The console chimed once, opening an open-line frequency with a sharp static crackle.
“Grandpa, please!” Emma sobbed into the speaker, her voice exploding with terrified, desperate urgency. “You have to save mommy! Daddy hurt her!”
David’s face drained of color before turning a deeper shade of purple. “You little bitch!” he snarled, lunging down the hallway toward the four-year-old child.
He took two furious strides before his momentum abruptly halted. From the floor, Sarah lunged with every ounce of strength remaining in her upper body. Her fingers clamped onto the cuff of David’s tailored trousers, twisting the fabric into an iron anchor.
David stumbled hard, catching himself against the wall. He whipped his head around, his fist raised high, ready to strike downward. “Let go of me, Sarah!”
Sarah looked up at him, her lips trembling from the excruciating fire in her leg, but her pale blue eyes burned with lethal, unyielding maternal fury.
“Don’t touch her,” Sarah rasped, her voice trembling with pain but fiercely, terrifyingly controlled. “Don’t you dare lay a finger on my daughter.”
“I’ll break your other leg, you crazy—”
Click.
The sound of the heavy front door unlocking from the outside cut through David’s threat like a gunshot. The electronic deadbolt disengaged with a dull, hydraulic hiss.
David froze. The raised fist hovering in the air trembled. Beside the island, Margaret’s wine glass tilted, spilling dark red droplets across the white cabinetry.
Through the frosted sidelights flanking the front door, a massive, imposing shadow loomed against the porch lighting. It stood completely still, broad-shouldered and immense, radiating an aura of lethal patience.
Emma backed away from the console, scurrying across the floor until she collapsed beside Sarah, burying her rosy face into her mother’s trembling shoulder.

David backed up a half-step, his arrogance completely evaporating into a cold, suffocating dread. His voice dropped to a frantic, stuttering whisper as he stared at the front entryway.
“Who did she call?” David whispered, the panic in his throat so thick he could barely swallow. “Sarah... who the hell did she just call?”
