Chapter 3

Victor did not wait for an answer. Emboldened by his own arrogance and the four years he had spent running the family’s downtown logistics lines, he threw Marissa roughly onto the floor and pivoted his full weight toward Daniel. He drew back his right arm, driving a heavy, closed-fist punch straight at Daniel’s jaw.

"You've gone soft over a gutter girl, Daniel—"

Daniel didn't flinch. He didn't even shift Noah’s position in his left arm.

With the seamless, instinctive economy of a veteran street fighter, Daniel slipped his head half an inch to the outside of the incoming blow. The displaced air brushed harmlessly past his temple.

Before Victor could recover his balance or pull his shoulder back, Daniel stepped into the pocket. His right fist drove forward in an explosive, bone-shattering counterpunch that landed flush across Victor’s cheekbone.

The sound of knuckles pulverizing cartilage cracked through the room like a gunshot.

Victor spun violently through the air, his polished leather shoes leaving skid marks on the hardwood. His heavy frame crashed full-weight into the rolling linen trolley stationed beside the nursery wall.

The impact sheared the metal casters from the frame. The trolley groaned and buckled, flipping onto its side with a deafening metallic roar. Folded baby blankets exploded from the shelves like a cloud of pastel fabric. Changing pads tumbled across the floorboards, lightweight wicker storage baskets shattered against the baseboards, and Victor collapsed into the wreckage, clutching his fractured jaw as thick crimson poured over his silk tie.

Evelyn leaped up from the dining table, her composure finally shattering into screeching panic.

"Victor!" she cried out. But seeing her nephew incapacitated, her twisted maternal fury redirected itself. Her eyes darted toward the empty bassinet, then toward Noah in Daniel's arm. With manic desperation, her manicured hands lunged forward, clawing straight for the infant. "Give me that boy! You are unfit! I am the matriarch of this family!"

Daniel intercepted her mid-stride.

His right hand clamped around Evelyn’s wrist like an iron vise, stopping her inches from the child. He twisted her arm downward with terrifying leverage, forcing her gaze directly into his dead, pitiless eyes.

Then, Daniel brought his open right hand across her face.

The thunderous slap echoed off the high ceiling like thunder.

Evelyn was lifted clean off her designer heels. She spun sideways, crashing directly into the eight-foot tall nursery-supply display. The wooden unit toppled forward. Stacks of empty diaper boxes burst open, raining cardboard across the room. Plush stuffed animals tumbled in an avalanche, folded cotton towels cascaded over her shoulders, and heavy decorative bins smashed onto the hardwood around her crumpled form.

The heavy double doors of the nursery wing burst open.

Four armed Carter bodyguards in dark tactical suits poured into the room, their weapons drawn. The moment their eyes took in the room—Victor bleeding in the linen debris, Evelyn buried beneath baby supplies, and Daniel standing tall with his infant son—the guards holstered their firearms, snapped their heads downward in total submission, and sealed the doors shut from the inside.

Daniel stood in the center of the ruins. He looked down at his mother, his voice a low, lethal hum.

"What did you do to my wife that I can't even imagine?"
