Chapter 8

The natural cinematic light in the portrait studio began to shift, the shadows lengthening slightly as the afternoon progressed. Viviana took a deep, steadying breath, allowing the adrenaline to slowly recede from her veins. She was the Head of the Hale family, a warlord in a tailored suit, but beneath the armor, she was still a mother.

She turned and walked out of the studio, navigating the opulent, sunlit hallways of her estate. She passed several armed enforcers, all of whom gave her respectful, deferential nods. The news of Damon’s removal had likely already spread through the secure comms, solidifying her absolute authority over the compound.

Viviana reached the heavily guarded nursery in the east wing. She gently pushed the door open.

The room was bathed in soft, warm colors. Oliver was sitting in the center of a plush rug, surrounded by building blocks. The adult nanny sat nearby, reading a book aloud in a soothing American accent.

When the door opened, Oliver looked up. His fair, rosy cheeks were still slightly puffy from crying, but his blue eyes brightened instantly.

"Mommy!" Oliver called out, scrambling to his feet and running across the room.

Viviana dropped to her knees, completely ignoring the crease in her tailored trousers, and caught her son in a fierce, loving embrace. She buried her face in his soft hair, inhaling the innocent scent of him. The cold, lethal Mafia boss vanished entirely, replaced by a fierce maternal warmth.

"Are you okay, my sweet boy?" Viviana whispered, pulling back to gently cup his face. "Did he hurt your wrist?"

"It hurts a little," Oliver sniffled, rubbing his small arm. He looked at her with wide, trusting eyes. "Is Daddy going to come back and yell at me?"

"No," Viviana promised, her voice filled with absolute, unshakeable certainty. "He is never coming back. He is never going to yell at you, or hurt you, ever again. Mommy sent him far away."

"Good," Oliver said softly, wrapping his small arms around her neck again. "I don't like him anymore."

Viviana held him tightly, her eyes closing as a wave of protective fury washed over her. She would burn the entire world to ash before she let anyone use her son as a pawn again.

"Mrs. Hale," a deep voice interrupted softly from the doorway.

Viviana opened her eyes. Standing in the hall was Marcus, her most trusted underboss. His white American features were set in grim, serious lines. He held a secure, encrypted tablet in his hand.

"I am busy, Marcus," Viviana said, keeping her voice low so as not to frighten Oliver.

"I apologize, Boss," Marcus said, stepping into the room and keeping his distance. "But we have a situation. A highly critical one."

Viviana slowly stood up, smoothing her son’s hair one last time. "Stay here with Maria, Oliver. Mommy has to go to work for a little bit."

"Okay, Mommy," Oliver smiled, turning back to his blocks.

Viviana stepped out into the hallway, pulling the nursery door shut behind her. The cold, calculating mask slammed back into place. "Speak."
