Chapter 15

The watch became Nolan’s again.

For months he refused to wear it.

Said it felt strange after hanging from Bishop’s collar.

Then one morning Archie found it on the dresser.

“Uncle.”

“What?”

“Watch.”

“I know.”

“Wear.”

Nolan stared at me.

I stayed out of it.

He put it on.

Archie smiled.

“Better.”

That was apparently the whole ritual.

Nolan wore it from then on.

The scratch reading RED remained on the back.

He never polished it away.

Not as shrine.

As history.

Rafe rebuilt estate security completely.

Not more guards.

Better separation of authority.

No one person controlled cameras, access, and staff movement anymore.

Dahlia and Ellis had been powerful partly because every household question flowed through siblings.

We changed that.

Support requests for staff went through a small team.

Housing decisions required more than one voice.

Security footage could not disappear because one officer wanted it gone.

Not dramatic.

Necessary.

I realized organizations often call personal trust efficient until personal trust becomes a private kingdom.

My father trusted Vincent deeply.

I trusted Vincent’s children because of that inherited trust.

Different generation.

Same shortcut.

Never again.

That did not mean suspicion everywhere.

It meant structure strong enough that trust did not need blindness.

Nolan teased me.

“You’re becoming boring.”

“Good.”

“Mafia boss discovers administrative controls.”

“Keep talking and I’ll send you to inventory.”

He stopped.

Archie overheard none of it.

He was in the yard throwing a ball for Bishop.

The dog ignored him.

Archie threw again.

Ignored.

He finally yelled:

“Bishop! You saved Uncle! You can fetch!”

Nolan laughed until he nearly dropped the watch.

May you like

Normal.

Beautifully normal.
