Chapter 5

The standoff in the luminous conservatory had pushed the festive atmosphere into a realm of pure, unadulterated dread. Fifty of the most dangerous individuals in the city watched as the political alliance between the Whitmore and Voss families disintegrated over a wet wicker basket and a shivering puppy.

Lucan did not break his cold, unwavering stare from Celine. Without looking away from the woman who had just confessed to attempting to drown his son's pet, he reached up and smoothly pulled his tailored dark suit jacket from his broad shoulders.

He took a slow, deliberate step toward Cora. The young maid was still shivering violently, her black dress clinging to her freezing skin.

With profound, measured grace, Lucan draped the heavy, warm fabric of his removed jacket around Cora’s damp shoulders. The artistic negative-space tattoos on his hands contrasted beautifully with the pristine white collar of her maid uniform as he adjusted the lapels to ensure she was fully covered. The heavy scent of his expensive cologne mixed with the smell of the fountain water.

It was a physical shield, an unmistakable declaration of absolute protection that stripped away Celine's authority in a single, fluid movement. It was a public declaration of the immense value he placed upon the housemaid standing beside him.

Miles, sensing the shift in the room's energy, moved closer to Cora. The six-year-old boy in the charcoal suit stood safely beside her leg, reaching up with a small, fair hand. He gently touched the cream towel, his fingers brushing against Pip’s wet fur.

"You saved my boat, Cora," Miles whispered softly, his innocent eyes looking up at the maid with absolute adoration.

Cora kept Pip safely cradled against her chest, her hands trembling as she pulled Lucan's jacket tighter around her shoulders. She looked at the mafia boss, her expressive eyes filled with a quiet, fierce gratitude.

Lucan held Celine’s gaze, his dark eyes pitch black and devoid of all humanity or familial warmth.

"This reception is concluded," Lucan stated, his voice ringing with absolute, terrifying authority over the silent crowd. "Everyone who does not carry the Whitmore name, or work in my personal security detail, will vacate this room immediately."

Chairs scraped frantically against the polished marble floors. Men and women with fair, rosy skin paled in terror as they abandoned their fine wine and festive cheer. They rushed toward the massive glass doors, eager to escape the impending explosion of violence before they were forced to take a side in a mafia war.

"Lucan, you are making a catastrophic mistake," Celine hissed, attempting to salvage her dignity as the room rapidly emptied. "My father will hear of this. The Voss family will not tolerate this level of public disrespect."

"I would burn every asset your family owns before I let you sleep under my roof again," Lucan replied coldly, stepping fully between his son and the monstrous woman. The room held its breath, suspended in silence, waiting for the apex predator to strike.
