Chapter 1

The luxurious conservatory of the Whitmore estate was completely flooded with a brilliant, warm golden light that entirely lacked the heavy yellow cast common to lesser mansions. Enormous tiered crystal chandeliers hung suspended from the painted glass ceilings, their myriad prisms catching the light and throwing golden reflections across the meticulously carved walnut furniture. The cream marble floors shone brilliantly beneath the plush velvet seating, framing the fifty elite guests, capos, and relatives mingling near the glass walls draped in heavy silk. At the far end of the room, a magnificent Christmas tree glowed with dense warm fairy lights, heavy gold ornaments, and rich burgundy ribbons, casting a festive warmth over the ornate indoor fountain that bubbled quietly beside it. Dozens of ivory candles flickered steadily in gilded candelabras, illuminating the fair, rosy skin and crisp American accents of the gathered mafia elite.

At the center of this majestic display stood Lucan Whitmore. Thirty-three years old, he possessed the rugged, undeniably masculine presence of an American mafia boss. His broad shoulders effortlessly filled out a flawlessly tailored dark three-piece suit. His face was a landscape of harsh, aristocratic angles, featuring a sharp jawline dusted with very short, neat stubble. His dark hair was naturally swept back, framing a face that commanded absolute, terrifying authority. A heavy family signet ring and a luxury wristwatch glinted under the chandeliers. Artistic tattoos utilizing negative space decorated his hands and fingers with generous spacing, and a small, distinct artistic tattoo peeked just above his crisp white collar.

"The holiday arrangements are absolutely flawless this year, Celine," a wealthy syndicate investor remarked, holding a crystal glass of bourbon.

"Thank you, Richard," Celine Voss replied smoothly, her American accent dripping with practiced charm. "I believe Christmas should be a time of overwhelming beauty and perfection. We have so much to be thankful for."

At twenty-nine, Lucan’s fiancée was a vision of high-society perfection in a luxurious emerald satin evening gown that clung perfectly to her curves, her fair skin glowing beneath the lights. Dazzling diamond earrings swayed gently from her lobes. Her public manner was flawless, radiating a polished smile that effectively masked a cold, calculating ambition underneath.

"And how is young Miles enjoying his evening?" Richard asked, gesturing toward the Christmas tree.

"Miles is simply thrilled with the festivities," Celine lied seamlessly, her smile never wavering.

Six-year-old Miles Whitmore stood near the edge of the fountain, dressed impeccably in a charcoal suit and a burgundy bow tie. His fair, rosy cheeks were flushed with excitement, his young mind completely oblivious to the dangerous syndicate politics swirling around him.

The sophisticated hum of the crowded reception was suddenly shattered by the harsh, violent sound of splashing water.

Conversations died instantly. Crystal glasses were lowered. Fifty pairs of eyes snapped toward the ornate indoor fountain.

Rising from the waist-deep water of the fountain was Cora Ellis. At twenty-five, the maid possessed a breathtaking, gentle beauty, but tonight, she looked like a woman who had just fought a war. Her fitted black maid dress and pristine white apron were completely soaked, clinging heavily to her delicate frame. The freezing water dripped from her white collar and cuffs. Her fair, clear skin was pale, and her dark hair was a disheveled mess. The white ruffled maid headband she wore sat noticeably askew on her head.

Despite her exhausted, vulnerable manner, Cora’s arms were locked tightly against her chest. She was securely cradling a cream towel. Inside the towel, shivering but miraculously quiet and awake, was Pip—Miles’s four-month-old spaniel puppy.

Cora stepped over the marble lip of the fountain, her soaked black flats squeaking against the polished floor. With her free hand, she dragged a wet wicker basket over the edge, dropping it onto the marble with a heavy, sickening thud.
