Chapter 1

The cascading crystal chandeliers cast a brilliant, warm golden light across the gilded mirrors and ivory-paneled walls of the grand dining hall. It was a space designed to project absolute power and refined elegance, anchored by a massive carved marble fireplace that crackled with a steady, comforting blaze. The luxurious interior was heavily perfumed with the scent of white roses, meticulously arranged between tall ivory candles glowing in heavy silver candelabras. The polished walnut dining table stretched across the room, surrounded by plush champagne velvet chairs. The generous illumination revealed every face in the room, highlighting the fair, rosy skin and crisp American accents of the fifty elite guests in attendance.

At the head of the room stood Elliot Crowne. He was a mafia boss of terrifying repute, yet he possessed the movie-star handsome features of a classic leading man. His powerful, broad shoulders effortlessly filled out a tailored dark three-piece suit. He had an angular face, a high-bridged nose, and a sharply defined jawline shadowed by extremely short, neatly trimmed stubble. His thick, slightly wavy hair was naturally swept back, though several loose strands fell carelessly across his forehead. Cold, perceptive eyes surveyed the room. Refined artistic tattoos graced his hands and fingers with generous spacing, contrasting with the heavy family signet ring and the expensive wristwatch he wore. A small, intricate neck tattoo peeked just above his crisp white collar. His wife, Helena, had supposedly died three months ago—a tragic car accident, a closed casket, a wound that had turned him into an even colder, more ruthless king.

Opposite him sat Viviana Shaw, his thirty-three-year-old fiancée. She was a vision in a sculpted champagne silk gown that clung perfectly to her figure. Diamond earrings caught the golden light, matching the massive engagement ring that rested heavily on her finger. She possessed elegant manners and a carefully maintained public smile, chatting effortlessly with a nearby politician.

Moving gracefully near the edge of the dining hall was Cora Bennett. The twenty-seven-year-old housemaid was exceptionally beautiful, with a softly oval face, delicate cheekbones, expressive brows, and fair, rosy skin. Her hair was immaculately arranged in a loose braided bun. Her slender figure and graceful posture were highlighted by a sophisticated black maid dress featuring a cinched waist, a fitted silhouette, and a short A-line skirt. A neatly tied white apron, a crisp white collar, and matching cuffs completed her uniform.

Cora approached a low walnut console resting against the ivory-paneled wall near the head table. She carried a heavy crystal vase filled with fresh white roses. Her heart hammered violently against her ribs. Earlier that day, while dusting the supposedly solid panels, she had heard a soft, desperate scraping sound. She had found a hidden latch, and what she had discovered behind it had terrified her to her very core.

She placed the vase on the console, her hands trembling slightly.

Knock. Knock. Knock.

Three faint, deliberate sounds echoed from directly behind the heavy ivory paneling.

Cora stopped adjusting the flowers instantly. Her entire body went rigid, freezing in place as if she had just been struck by lightning. She slowly rested her open palm against the cool, painted wood of the wall, closing her eyes.

Elliot, whose cold, perceptive eyes were constantly scanning his environment, instantly noticed the housemaid’s sudden, terrifying stillness. He watched the way the blood drained from her delicate cheekbones, leaving her fair skin ashen.

He moved with deliberate, predatory grace, stepping away from his velvet chair. He closed the short distance and looked directly into Cora’s wide, terrified eyes.

"Cora. Who’s behind that wall?"

Elliot’s voice was deep and quiet, vibrating with a measured, controlled pause after her name. The sheer, commanding authority in his tone sliced through the ambient chatter of the room like a straight razor.
