Chapter 6

Julian left the cellar first.

Not because he was weak.

Because he needed air.

Claire found him alone near the library.

His hands rested on the wheelchair rims.

Still.

Controlled.

She stopped several feet away.

“You knew some of it.”

“Yes.”

“How much?”

“Enough.”

“Why stay with them?”

Julian laughed once.

Not humor.

“Where?”

Claire frowned.

He continued.

“After the crash, Father died eight months later.”

“Victoria took control of the house.”

“Gabriel took security.”

“They controlled the elevators.”

“Drivers.”

“Doctors.”

“Schedules.”

Claire stared.

“They trapped you.”

Julian’s jaw tightened.

“No.”

Then:

“They convinced me leaving would kill me.”

That distinction mattered.

Claire said nothing.

Julian continued.

“Every attempt became proof.”

“One driver brake failure.”

“One medication mix-up.”

“One elevator stall.”

“All accidents?”

He looked at her.

“Do you think so?”

No.

Claire understood.

Fear manufactured through incidents.

Then used to justify more control.

Julian said:

“Victoria would say…”

His voice hardened.

“See?”

“You can’t even cross town without someone trying to kill you.”

Gabriel handled the solution.

More guards.

More surveillance.

Fewer independent meetings.

More dependence.

Julian looked toward the terrace.

“Eventually I stopped testing it.”

Claire sat nearby.

Not touching him.

“Why keep Andrew’s envelope?”

“Because he made me promise.”

“To what?”

“If something happened to him, wait until Claire became strong enough to survive Thomas.”

Claire looked at him.

Julian continued.

“Andrew didn’t think you were weak.”

“He thought you loved your uncle.”

That hurt.

Because it was true.

Thomas had raised her.

Taught her chess.

Taught her shooting.

Sat beside her at Andrew’s funeral.

Then whispered Vescari did this.

Claire looked down.

“He used grief.”

“Yes.”

Julian continued.

“And I let you investigate me.”

She looked at him sharply.

“You knew?”

“Month three.”

“Why not stop me?”

“Because you were getting closer to Gabriel.”

Claire stared.

He smiled faintly.

“You are not subtle when angry.”

That almost broke the tension.

Almost.

Then Thomas Reed—Julian’s estate operations chief, not Bennett—entered.

“Mr. Vescari.”

Julian turned.

“What?”

“We found something in Gabriel’s security office.”

A row of drives.

Hidden.

One labeled CLAIRE B.

Claire’s face hardened.

They opened it upstairs.

Videos.

Months of her working as Julian’s assistant.

Arriving.

Leaving.

Meeting Bennett bodyguards secretly.

Checking old records.

Following Gabriel.

Victoria smiled when she saw.

“You really thought nobody saw you?”

Claire ignored her.

Then one video appeared.

Claire meeting Thomas Bennett in a parking garage.

Her uncle.

Three weeks earlier.

The audio played.

Thomas’s voice:

“Keep Julian close.”

“People confess when they think a woman pities them.”

Claire froze.

That was not what she remembered.

She had remembered Thomas saying Julian might know more than he admitted.

The recording continued.

Thomas:

“If you find Andrew’s envelope…”

Claire looked up sharply.

“…bring it to me before opening it.”

Silence.

Claire had never told Thomas there was an envelope.

She had not known.

Julian looked at her.

May you like

And now Thomas Bennett was no longer merely part of Andrew’s past.

He had been waiting for the envelope in the present.
