Chapter 4

The brass key belonged to a Vescari wine vault.

Julian recognized it immediately.

Victoria denied knowing.

Too quickly.

Claire looked at her.

“Where?”

“No idea.”

Julian answered.

“Lower east cellar.”

Victoria turned.

He continued.

“Father sealed it ten years ago.”

Claire stared.

“Why?”

Julian’s face tightened.

“After the crash.”

There it was again.

Everything returned there.

Gabriel laughed.

“Open it.”

Claire looked at him.

He smiled.

“If you want to learn what Andrew really was.”

Victoria snapped:

“Shut up.”

That surprised Claire.

Gabriel wanted the vault opened.

Victoria did not.

Interesting.

Julian looked at Claire.

“We go together.”

Victoria laughed.

“You can barely cross a terrace without drowning.”

Julian’s face hardened.

Claire turned toward her.

Victoria continued.

“You think because she pulled you out, you’re suddenly useful?”

Julian said nothing.

She smiled.

“You were easier before the accident.”

Then:

“At least then Father still imagined you might become a man.”

Claire’s expression changed.

Julian remained still.

Too still.

Victoria had used that insult before.

Many times.

Claire saw it in his face.

Not new pain.

Old scar.

She walked toward Victoria.

“Say it again.”

Victoria smiled.

“What?”

“The part where his chair makes him less of a man.”

Julian looked at Claire.

Victoria rolled her eyes.

“Don't become theatrical.”

Claire leaned closer.

“You tried to drown someone who cannot swim freely because of the accident.”

Victoria’s smile thinned.

“And?”

“You knew exactly what that meant.”

“Of course.”

No shame.

Claire’s eyes went cold.

Victoria continued:

“Julian became a liability years ago.”

“He should be grateful the family kept him visible.”

Julian’s jaw tightened.

Claire understood the control mechanism now.

Gratitude.

Survival framed as debt.

The same cruelty repeated until dependence felt natural.

They went downstairs.

The east cellar smelled of stone and cork.

Julian directed them to the far wall.

A brass keyhole sat beneath an old Vescari crest.

Claire inserted Andrew’s key.

Click.

A narrow iron door released.

Victoria swore.

Gabriel smiled.

Inside was not wine.

It was a hidden meeting room.

One table.

Six chairs.

Old cassette recorder.

Maps.

Photographs.

Claire stepped inside.

One photograph showed Andrew.

Julian.

Gabriel.

Victoria.

And one more man.

Claire stopped.

Thomas Bennett.

Her late uncle.

The man who had raised her after their mother died.

The man who had told Claire for eighteen months that Vescari killed Andrew.

Her breathing changed.

Julian watched her.

“You know him.”

“Yes.”

Victoria smiled.

Finally something that hurt Claire more than Andrew’s name.

“Oh.”

She leaned in.

“You didn’t know Uncle Thomas was involved?”

Claire stared.

Victoria continued cruelly:

“Andrew really did keep you beautifully ignorant.”

Claire looked at Julian.

He said nothing.

That hurt too.

On the table sat six labeled cassette tapes.

The last one read:

ANDREW — IF I DON’T COME BACK.

Claire reached for it.

Gabriel moved.

Too late.

Julian’s hand stopped her.

“Before you play that…”

May you like

Claire looked at him.

“…you need to know Thomas Bennett was the man who ordered the crash.”
