Chapter 12

Samuel Vescari had been dead for fifteen years.
According to the family.
Julian no longer believed it.
Neither did Claire.
Gabriel did.
Or pretended to.
“This is ridiculous.”
Claire looked at him.
“You’re afraid.”
He laughed.
“No.”
“You are.”
His face hardened.
Julian said:
“Samuel trained Gabriel.”
Silence.
There.
Gabriel looked at Julian.
Claire turned.
“Did he?”
Julian nodded.
“Before the accident.”
Gabriel said nothing.
Claire continued.
“Then you know.”
He looked away.
Victoria snapped:
“Gabriel.”
He turned toward her.
She finally understood.
“You knew Samuel was alive?”
No answer.
Her face changed.
All these years, she had believed she was near the top.
Maybe she wasn’t.
Gabriel smiled faintly.
Not at Claire.
At Victoria.
“You really thought you were running anything?”
That destroyed her composure.
She stood.
“You took orders from me.”
“When useful.”
Her face went white.
Gabriel continued.
“You were good at Julian.”
“Thomas was good at Bennett.”
“Victor handled Caldwell.”
“Others handled Cross.”
Claire’s eyes narrowed.
The network wasn’t a partnership.
It was compartments.
Each villain thinking they were central.
Samuel above.
Gabriel continued.
“Andrew figured it out.”
“Too late.”
Claire’s expression hardened.
“What happened at the train yard?”
Gabriel stared at the table.
Then:
“Thomas attacked Andrew.”
Thomas said nothing.
“Andrew got away.”
“Samuel intercepted him.”
Claire’s voice dropped.
“And?”
Gabriel smiled.
Cruelty returning because truth was his final weapon.
“Andrew begged.”
Claire stared.
Thomas snapped:
“No.”
Gabriel looked at him.
“Fine.”
“He didn’t.”
Claire waited.
Gabriel continued.
“He laughed.”
That sounded like Andrew.
The pain hurt differently.
“He told Samuel the network was already dead.”
“Because?”
“He made copies.”
“Where?”
“No idea.”
“Then what?”
Gabriel looked at Julian.
“Samuel asked about the envelope.”
Julian froze.
Claire looked at him.
Andrew had already given it to Julian before the final meeting.
Samuel knew.
Gabriel continued.
“Andrew said Julian would never give it back.”
Julian’s face tightened.
Then:
“Samuel said he would.”
Claire understood.
The accident.
Years of control.
Drowning attempt.
Everything had always returned to Julian.
Because Andrew used him as the last keeper.
Gabriel continued.
“Samuel shot Andrew.”
Silence.
Claire did not move.
No dramatic scream.
No collapse.
Just stillness.
Thomas looked at her.
“Claire…”
She raised one hand.
Not now.
Gabriel continued.
“He left the body where Bennett men would find it.”
“Made it look like Vescari retaliation.”
Thomas looked away.
The lie that launched Claire’s investigation.
Samuel had manufactured even the grief narrative.
Claire’s voice became quiet.
“Where is he?”
Gabriel smiled.
“Still asking the right question too late.”
Julian said:
“Where?”
Gabriel looked toward the lake.
Then toward the French doors.
“He never left the property.”
Everyone froze.
Victoria laughed nervously.
“What?”
Gabriel’s smile widened.
“The east guest house.”
Julian stared.
It had been closed for years.
Gabriel continued.
“Samuel has been living fifty yards from this mansion.”
Silence.
Claire looked at Julian.
He looked devastated.
May you like
Not because Samuel was alive.
Because he had been imprisoned inside his own estate while the architect of it lived nearby.
