Chapter 4

The child’s knitted cardigan seemed to glow in the candlelight, a fragile, vibrant accusation against the absolute monstrosity of Celia's words. The sheer arrogance of her confession laid bare a darkness so deep and calculated that it froze the blood in the veins of every hardened criminal in the room. Celia had not merely stolen a child; she had commodified an innocent life under the guise of the mafia boss's charity, assuming his ruthless nature would validate her cruelty.

Damian’s cold eyes snapped away from Celia. He moved with a terrifying, predatory calm, rising slowly from his velvet chair. The movement was fluid and absolute. His broad, powerful shoulders dominated the space as he stood to his full, imposing height. He stepped smoothly around the edge of the polished walnut table, placing his tailored dark suit directly beside Margaret and Clara, physically aligning himself with the housemaid and the grieving grandmother.

He stood towering over them, his massive frame acting as an impenetrable wall between the women and the rest of the room. He briefly looked down toward Clara. For a fraction of a second, the cold, observant wall of the mafia boss crumbled. Restrained, profound concern softened his angular face as he took in her pale, terrified features and the sheer bravery it had taken for her to orchestrate this confrontation.

Then, Damian slowly shifted his eyes back toward Celia.

His head followed his gaze in a slow, deliberate turn. The small artistic tattoo on his neck shifted above his crisp white collar. The muscles in his sharply defined jaw tightened almost imperceptibly, setting into unyielding granite. His mouth became completely still, a terrifying void that swallowed all the warmth in the room.

He held Celia’s eyes with a cold, unwavering, and absolute stare. He did not yell. He did not ask a question immediately. He simply stared at her, stripping away every layer of her satin and diamonds, exposing the rot underneath.

Every guest remained perfectly attentive and utterly motionless, terrified to even draw a breath, waiting for the execution to begin.

"Are you all waiting for a formal invitation to vacate my dining room?" Damian asked, his deep, low voice echoing across the long table. He didn't look at the guests; his cold eyes remained entirely fixed on his fiancée.

The question was a direct command. Instantly, the scraping of velvet dining chairs against the cream marble floor sounded like thunder. Dozens of capos, crime bosses, and politicians scrambled to their feet, abandoning their fine porcelain plates and crystal stemware. They moved with a hurried, terrified silence, practically sprinting toward the heavy silk curtains and the grand double doors of the dining room. No one offered their goodbyes or dared to look back.

Within two minutes, the massive, luxurious room was entirely empty, save for the four of them: Damian, Celia, Clara, and the trembling Margaret. The heavy mahogany doors clicked shut, echoing with a hollow, terrifying finality.

"Damian, darling, please," Celia whispered, her voice cracking as the reality of her isolation set in. She reached out across the table, her engagement ring flashing in the candlelight. "You are making a massive mistake. The old woman is delusional! The child was placed in a proper home! It was a legal adoption!"

Damian slowly lowered his hands, resting them against his sides. "Do you believe my intellect is as fragile as your lies?" His measured pauses carried the weight of an executioner's blade.

"The maid set this up!" Celia stammered, pulling her hand back as if the table had burned her. "Clara’s manipulating you! She hates me! She’s been trying to ruin this engagement since the day I moved in! She wants your money, Damian! She paid this old woman to cause a scene!"
