Chapter 10

The morning sun cast a bright, airy, luminous light over the Westbrook estate, revealing the true extent of the devastation. The iron gates were twisted, the manicured lawns scarred by explosives, and the scent of cordite still clung to the winter air. Inside, however, the silence was absolute, filled with a soft elegant warmth. The dead had been cleared, the blood washed from the cream marble, and the fortress had held.
Damian stood in his private study, gazing out the shattered window. He wore a fresh, dark three-piece suit, his powerful shoulders unbowed by the weight of the previous night. The extremely short, neatly trimmed stubble on his jawline perfectly framed his cold, observant eyes as he surveyed his ruined, yet victorious, kingdom.
"Are the remaining Arden territories officially under our control, Marcus?" Damian asked, not turning as the heavy mahogany door opened.
"Yes, Boss," Marcus grunted, stepping into the room with his arm wrapped in a fresh bandage. "The surviving capos surrendered by dawn. They know Victor is dead. The entire western seaboard is yours."
"Did you secure the prisoner in the sub-basement?" Damian inquired, his deep, low voice dropping in temperature.
"Celia is still in the holding cell," Marcus confirmed. "She hasn't stopped crying since the bombs went off. She knows her father failed."
"Shall we go remind her of the penalty for treason in my house?" Damian asked, turning away from the window.
Clara was waiting in the grand hallway when they emerged from the study. She was no longer wearing the sophisticated black maid dress. Instead, she was dressed in a tailored, emerald-green silk blouse and dark trousers, clothes Damian had ordered for her before the sun rose. Her dark hair was pinned up elegantly, and she stood with a graceful, commanding posture.
"Did you sleep at all, Clara?" Damian asked, stopping before her, his cold eyes warming instantly at the sight of her.
"A little," Clara answered softly, her softly oval face looking refreshed despite the trauma. "Margaret is awake. The doctor said she will be fine, just exhausted. Marcus has already sent men to the address to retrieve Emma."
"Do you wish to accompany me downstairs?" Damian asked, offering her his arm. "Or would you prefer to stay in the light?"
Clara looked at his refined, tattooed hand, then up into his angular face. She had crossed the line from servant to partner the moment she took the gun from him. She placed her hand on his arm.
"Will you show me what happens to monsters?" Clara asked, her voice steady.
They descended into the cold, concrete labyrinth of the sub-basement. The air grew damp, smelling of earth and iron. Marcus unlocked the heavy steel door to Celia's cell, pulling it open with a loud groan.
Celia was huddled on the metal cot, her sculpted satin gown ruined beyond recognition, stained with dirt and tears. When she saw Damian, she scrambled to the floor, her diamond earrings swinging wildly.
"Damian! Please!" Celia sobbed, crawling toward his polished leather shoes. "My father... where is my father? He was supposed to rescue me!"
"Do you truly believe a man who led his soldiers into a slaughter could save anyone?" Damian asked, looking down at her with absolute, unwavering disgust.
"A slaughter?" Celia gasped, her face turning pale. "No... no, you're lying! He had an army!"
"Did you think an army of cowards could defeat a man fighting for what is right?" Damian inquired, his voice echoing in the small, concrete room.
Celia looked past Damian, her eyes widening as she registered Clara standing beside him, wearing silk instead of a maid's apron.
"You!" Celia shrieked, pointing a trembling finger at Clara. "You ruined everything! You are nothing but a servant! A rat!"
"Is she a servant, or is she the woman who will wear the ring you so desperately coveted?" Damian asked, stepping protectively in front of Clara.
Celia collapsed, sobbing hysterically as the reality of her total defeat crushed her. "What are you going to do to me? Please, Damian, just let me go!"
"Do you believe you will ever see the sun again, Celia?" Damian asked quietly.
He didn't wait for her answer. He turned his broad shoulders, leading Clara out of the cell. As the heavy steel door slammed shut, cutting off Celia's screams, Damian looked down at the beautiful woman holding his arm.

"Are you ready for the life that comes next, Clara?" Damian asked, a rare, genuine softness touching his features in the bright, luminous light.
"I am ready," Clara whispered, stepping into the future with the king of the underworld.
