Chapter 6

The heavy silence of the pool terrace was broken by the soft, shuffling footsteps of a terrified child.
Audrey walked away from the ruined cabana rack, her damp summer dress clinging to her small legs. She didn't look at Vivienne groaning beneath the fallen fabric, nor did she look at the capos staring in shock. Guided by a memory hidden away in her three-year-old mind, Audrey walked purposefully toward the old stone wall that bordered the far side of the pool.
Mrs. Keller, who had rushed back to the terrace upon hearing the commotion, gasped softly, pressing her hands to her mouth.
"Audrey, sweetheart, come away from there," Mrs. Keller whispered, her voice trembling with anxiety. "It's not safe."
"She told me to remember," Audrey cried softly, ignoring the nanny. "Mommy said if she went away, I had to look here."
Audrey reached the rough surface of the stonework. Her tiny fingers traced the masonry until she found a nearly invisible, hairline seam cutting through the mortar. She touched it reverently with her fingertips, then turned and pointed at it.
"Here, Daddy," Audrey said, her bright blue eyes welling with fresh tears. "Mommy’s secret is here."
Mrs. Keller stared in utter shock, her fair skin paling as the implications of the child's words sank in. "Dear God..." the nanny breathed.
Cassandro walked slowly toward the wall, his polished leather shoes crunching faintly against stray pebbles on the patio. He stopped beside his daughter, his tall, deeply masculine frame casting a long shadow over the stones. His cold, sharp eyes examined the nearly invisible seam she had pointed out.
He moved his hand toward the concealed panel, his tattooed fingers tracing the sharp, unnatural edge of the cut stone.
"So my wife never abandoned me," Cassandro said, his voice dead calm, yet echoing with a grief and fury so profound it chilled the blood of every man present. He turned his head slowly, looking back over his shoulder at the wreckage of the cabana rack.
Vivienne pushed a heavy fabric panel off her face. Her rosy cheeks were marred by a deep, dark bruise from his strike. She stared at the stone wall, her eyes wide, her face becoming utterly, genuinely frightened.

"Take me to her," Cassandro commanded, his voice dropping to a terrifying, measured whisper directed entirely at Vivienne. "Right now."
"It's a lie!" Vivienne shrieked from the ground, scrambling backward like a cornered animal. "There is nothing behind that wall! The child is crazy!"
