Chapter 1

The afternoon sun poured over the sprawling private estate, bathing the manicured gardens in brilliant, cinematic light. There was absolutely no trace of a dull or yellow tint in the air; the sky was a piercing, vivid blue, and the vibrant emerald of the lawns contrasted perfectly with the stark white linens draping the outdoor banquet tables. It was a flawless summer day, designed to perfection. The guests, an elite gathering of white American adults draped in their finest formal attire, mingled across the stone terrace. Their fair, rosy skin glowed with health and generational wealth. Crisp American accents floated through the bright atmosphere as champagne flutes clinked and lucrative deals were quietly struck beneath the shade of the blooming oak trees.
At the edge of the terrace, standing slightly apart from the main crowd, Dominic Ravello commanded the space without having to lift a single finger. At forty-four years old, Dominic was breathtakingly handsome, possessing the chiseled, flawless features of a classic movie star. His thick, slightly wavy dark hair was naturally slicked back, though a few loose strands fell effortlessly over his forehead, lending him a charming, almost romantic look. But there was absolutely nothing soft about him. His angular face, high-bridged nose, and sharply defined jawline were framed by an extremely short, neatly trimmed stubble. His eyes were cold, sharp, and deeply intimidating—the eyes of a veteran Mafia Boss who missed nothing.
He wore a dark, meticulously tailored three-piece suit, the crisp white dress shirt beneath it glowing in the natural light. A heavy gold family signet ring rested on his finger, alongside a luxury wristwatch. His polished leather shoes gleamed against the stone path.
"The shipments from the northern docks have been delayed by federal inspectors," a broad-shouldered capo named Vincent said, keeping his voice respectful as he stood before his boss.
Dominic did not immediately reply. He took a slow, measured breath, his cold eyes scanning the garden. When he finally spoke, his volume was terrifyingly low, forcing the men around him to lean in to hear his crisp American accent.
"We do not... tolerate delays," Dominic said, his slow, controlled pauses making every word sound like a drawn blade. "You will find the inspector. You will remind him... of his obligations to this family."
"Of course, Boss. It will be handled tonight," Vincent assured him quickly, eager to please the imposing leader. "But what about the Cross family? Marcus is already pushing for control of the eastern ports now that the engagement is official."
"Marcus Cross... is an associate," Dominic murmured, adjusting his pristine cuffs. "He is not blood. This engagement to his sister is a tactical merger, nothing more. He will receive... exactly what I allow him to receive."
"Vivienne is certainly playing the part of the perfect fiancée today," Vincent noted, nodding toward the center of the garden.
Dominic’s eyes followed the gesture. Vivienne Cross, his thirty-four-year-old fiancée, stood near a tall decorative engagement arch adorned with hanging lanterns and silk flower garlands. She wore a luxurious, sweeping engagement gown that clung to her figure, heavy diamond jewelry catching the bright light. Her fair, rosy face was curled into a picture-perfect smile as she laughed with the wealthy guests.
"She plays the part well," Dominic agreed, his tone entirely devoid of warmth. "But a flawless performance... is still a performance. Where is my daughter, Vincent? Aria was supposed to be brought down thirty minutes ago."

"I believe the nanny was dressing her in the east wing, Boss," Vincent replied, checking his own watch. "Shall I send someone to retrieve her?"
"No," Dominic said, a sudden, inexplicable tightness gripping his chest. His sharp, intimidating eyes narrowed as he looked at the grand double doors of the estate. "I will find her myself. Keep Marcus entertained. Do not let him near my capos."
