Chapter 4

The golden reflections shimmered across the silk drapes, framing the tense silence near the gilded mirror. Mira remained paralyzed, her chest heaving rapidly beneath the fitted black fabric of her creased dress. To refuse a direct order from the boss's fiancée in front of the syndicate capos was an insult that could cost her life. To obey felt like tearing her own soul apart.

Mira’s hands hesitated. She slowly raised her trembling fingers toward the intricate updo, her knuckles turning bone-white. She hovered inches away from the stolen braid. But she couldn't do it. The trauma was too raw, the humiliation too profound.

Her hands lowered slowly back to her sides. Mira lifted her chin, meeting Candice’s cold, arrogant gaze.

"Please," Mira whispered, speaking through a ragged, trembling breath. "I can't touch it."

Candice’s polished smile faltered for a microscopic second. Her fair, rosy skin paled slightly beneath her flawless makeup. She opened her mouth to issue a vicious, whispered threat, prepared to have her guards drag the maid away.

But before she could speak, a small, innocent voice broke the terrifying tableau.

Noah, standing just a few feet away in his charcoal suit, stepped forward. The six-year-old boy looked up at Candice, his dark eyes wide with pure, unfiltered curiosity. He noticed the familiar dark weave of hair pinned against the blonde updo. He looked delightedly at his future stepmother.

"Auntie, is that Mommy’s princess braid?" Noah asked.

The childish, clear American accent sliced through the ambient noise of the ballroom with the devastating force of a detonating bomb. The word "Mommy" echoed off the cream marble columns, drawing the immediate, shocked attention of every guest nearby.

Simultaneously, the heavy, measured footsteps of Marcus Hale echoed behind them. The mafia boss had returned from speaking with the photographer, stepping perfectly into the background of the scene just as his son spoke those devastating words.

Marcus stopped moving entirely. His broad shoulders went rigid beneath his dark three-piece suit. He looked at his son, processing the innocent question. Then, he looked at Candice's intricate hairstyle. Finally, his dark, observant eyes dropped to Mira.

For the first time all evening, Marcus truly looked at the housemaid. He registered her rumpled uniform, her puffy eyes, and the brutal, uneven hacking of her once-beautiful hair. The disheveled strands framed a face paralyzed by terror.

The realization of the absolute, humiliating violence that had occurred in his home cemented itself in his mind.

Marcus stepped forward. The calm, composed host was instantly replaced by the ruthless, cold-blooded king of the syndicate. A dark, absolute void of lethal intent flooded his gaze. The effect on the room was instantaneous.

Every single guest in the ballroom stopped speaking. Crystal glasses were lowered slowly. Fifty faces turned toward Marcus, their fair skin paling as they watched the mafia boss step directly beside the trembling maid.
