Chapter 3

The clatter of crystal glasses and the low hum of affluent conversations provided a rhythmic backdrop to the Christmas Eve festivities. Mira pushed through the silk drapes, stepping back into the bright, airy light of the grand ballroom. The golden reflections offered absolutely no place to hide her disheveled appearance. She kept her head down, navigating the velvet seating with agonizing care. She kept Noah close by her side, the little boy proudly holding onto her apron as they approached the portrait area.
The space designated for the family photographs was arranged beside a magnificent, full-length gilded mirror near the towering Christmas tree. The photographer was adjusting his lighting umbrellas, ensuring the warm fairy lights of the tree reflected perfectly against the cream marble.
Candice was standing in front of the gilded mirror, admiring her reflection. Her elaborate updo was a masterpiece of styling, but woven intricately into the blonde strands was a thick, dark, familiar braid, serving as a decorative, stolen hairpiece.
"Ah, there is our clumsy little servant," Candice noted, catching sight of Mira in the mirror. Her voice carried a sweet, poisonous lilt that only the housemaid could truly decipher.
Mira froze. Her hands gripped the fabric of her rumpled apron tightly. She wanted to turn and run, but she was trapped in the luminous, crowded ballroom, surrounded by fifty guests.
Candice turned slowly beside the mirror, the emerald satin of her gown shimmering under the chandeliers. She presented the braided updo to Mira, a twisted, sadistic display of her absolute dominance. She looked directly at the trembling housemaid. The socialite maintained her polished, flawless public smile, but her eyes burned with malicious triumph.
"Come here, Mira," Candice commanded, her American accent dripping with condescending superiority.
Mira swallowed hard, her pulse racing frantically. She took two hesitant steps forward, leaving Noah standing a few feet away. She stepped into the medium wide space directly in front of the mafia boss's fiancée.

"Fix my braid," Candice said, her voice dropping into a quiet, threatening whisper meant only for her. "A few strands are out of place. And smile for Christmas. You wouldn't want to ruin the portraits, would you?"
The words hung in the bright, luminous air. Mira felt a suffocating wave of terror wash over her. She stared at her own severed hair, woven into the scalp of the monster standing before her. To touch it felt like an unbearable violation, a physical reminder of the brutal assault she had endured just hours ago.
