Chapter 8

Iris held Caleb’s intense, unyielding gaze, refusing to look away from the most dangerous man in the city. The ambient, golden warmth of the room provided no comfort as she opened her mouth to speak.

She answered in a strained, careful voice that barely disturbed the air, yet echoed with absolute, devastating clarity.

“Sabine said adopted children aren’t family.”

The words were a quiet, devastating detonation. They hung in the luminous air, bouncing off the ivory wall panels and gilded mirrors, impossible to misinterpret.

Iris swallowed hard, her lips trembling slightly as she finished the damning confession. "She said he didn't belong at this table. She told him that if he tried to eat with you, she would make sure he was sent back to the orphanage tomorrow."

The absolute, terrifying implication of the housemaid's words crashed over the dining hall. Sabine had not just slid a plate away; she had actively, maliciously terrorized a grieving seven-year-old child, utilizing the deepest, most profound fear an adopted orphan possessed to ensure his submission and absence.

A collective, stifled gasp rippled through the gathered relatives and associates. To state that the bride-to-be had psychologically tortured the sole heir of the Bennett syndicate was a horrifying revelation that disturbed even the hardened criminals sitting at the table. In the violent world of the American Mafia, a boss's child was a sacred, untouchable entity, regardless of bloodline.

Across the polished walnut table, Sabine’s fair, rosy skin drained entirely of color. Her eyes widened in sheer, unadulterated panic. She realized the narrative was completely destroyed.

"She is lying!" Sabine shrieked, her voice pitching up into a hysterical, defensive frequency. She entirely abandoned her polished social poise, pointing a shaking, diamond-clad finger at the housemaid. "She is a manipulative, lying servant! I never said that! She wants you to turn against me! She is trying to ruin this dinner!"

"Do you believe a woman whose hands shake with terror possesses the guile to invent such a specific, monstrous lie in front of fifty armed men?" Caleb asked.

His deep, low voice rolled through the quiet room, the measured pauses striking like the heavy toll of a funeral bell.

"She hates me!" Sabine cried, tears of panic and frustration finally spilling over her fair cheeks, ruining her pristine makeup. "And the boy is confused! He misunderstood me! I was only trying to teach him the rules of the household!"

"Do the rules of my household dictate that my son is anything less than my blood?" Caleb inquired softly, the volume dropping into a register of pure, concentrated ice.

Before Sabine could scream another denial, a small, trembling voice broke the heavy silence of the dining hall, delivering a plea far more devastating than the maid's confession.
