Chapter 1

The sprawling dining hall of the Bennett mansion was a masterclass in orchestrated opulence, a gilded cage designed to house the most dangerous predators on the eastern seaboard. Cascading crystal chandeliers hung suspended from the vaulted ceilings, their teardrop prisms fracturing the light and casting a soft, elegant golden warmth across the intricately carved ivory wall panels and gilded mirrors. The room smelled of expensive cigar smoke, roasted meats, and the heavy, sweet perfume of white roses that spilled from massive silver candelabras. Every detail, from the heavy silk curtains framing the floor-to-ceiling windows to the plush champagne velvet chairs, had been curated to project absolute, untouchable power.
The guests, an assembly of high-ranking syndicate members and their wives, spoke in hushed, polite American accents. Their fair, rosy skin was illuminated perfectly by the generous lighting that left no face in shadow. At the absolute center of this magnificent display stood Caleb Bennett.
At forty-four, the Mafia boss possessed a movie-star handsomeness that commanded the room long before his lethal reputation ever could. His powerful, broad shoulders effortlessly filled out a tailored dark three-piece suit. He had an angular face, defined by a high-bridged nose and a sharply defined jaw, shadowed by extremely short, neatly trimmed stubble. His thick, slightly wavy hair was naturally swept back, though a few loose strands fell stubbornly over his forehead. His cold, perceptive eyes missed nothing, taking in the micro-expressions of the capos seated down the long, polished walnut table. Refined artistic tattoos crept across his hands and fingers with generous spacing, flexing slightly as he held a crystal glass of bourbon. A small, elegant neck tattoo peeked just above his crisp white collar, a stark contrast to his polished leather shoes and the heavy family signet ring on his hand.
"The shipments from the harbor have been secured, Mr. Bennett," an underboss named Thomas murmured, leaning in close. "We expect no further interruptions from the local authorities. The engagement dinner can proceed without any outside distractions."
Caleb slowly turned the heavy signet ring on his right hand. His deep, low voice rolled through the dining gallery, punctuated by deliberate, terrifying pauses.
"Do we consider local authorities a distraction, Thomas, or merely an easily managed expense?" Caleb asked, his gaze sweeping over the crystal stemware and fine porcelain plates.
"An expense, sir. Completely managed," Thomas stammered, his rosy cheeks flushing a darker shade of red under the boss's intense scrutiny. "We are monitoring the rival families as well. The perimeter is airtight."
"Have you ensured that the docks are entirely locked down for the remainder of the week?" Caleb inquired, taking a slow sip of his drink.
"Yes, Mr. Bennett. Nothing moves without your explicit authorization," the underboss promised, nodding vigorously before retreating to his designated velvet chair.
Caleb set his glass down. He was a man who required absolute control over his environment, a control that he felt slipping not because of rival syndicates, but because of the simmering, toxic domestic tension festering within his own home. He had been away on business for three weeks, and upon his return, the atmosphere in the mansion had shifted. He adjusted his pristine cuffs, his observant eyes shifting toward the heavy mahogany doors leading to the residential wing, waiting for his newly adopted son to make an appearance.

"Is the boy ready?" Caleb asked a passing security detail, his voice a low rumble.
"He is on his way down now, sir," the guard replied respectfully. "Miss Hayes is bringing him."
