Chapter 3

The cinematic, golden light of the chandeliers seemed to sharpen and focus entirely on the entrance to the ballroom. Standing in the archway was Mason Vale.

At thirty-three, the mafia boss commanded the sprawling estate with a quiet, undeniable masculinity. He possessed broad, powerful shoulders that effortlessly filled out his tailored dark three-piece suit. His angular jaw was framed by naturally swept-back dark hair, shadowed by an extremely short, neat stubble. Refined, artistic tattoos utilizing negative space decorated the backs of his hands and fingers, standing in stark contrast to the heavy family signet ring and the luxury wristwatch that caught the light. A small, delicate ink design peeked just above his crisp white collar.

Mason stepped fully into the grand foyer. He moved with absolute, predatory grace, his polished shoes making no sound against the marble.

The effect on the surrounding space was instantaneous. The sheer, commanding, and terrifying aura radiating from Mason stripped away the festive atmosphere of the Christmas reception in a heartbeat. Every single guest standing near the open archway of the ballroom stopped speaking. Champagne flutes were lowered slowly. The polite, affluent conversation died entirely in their throats, replaced by a suffocating, terrified silence. Dozens of faces turned toward the foyer, watching the mafia boss.

Mason did not look at his capos. He did not look at the wealthy donors. He walked directly toward the sweeping staircase.

He stopped beside Lila.

The air around him was thick with a dangerous, electric gravity. He was a man who survived by analyzing every minute detail of his environment. He saw the heavy leather travel bag resting on the console. He saw the pink piggy bank clutched desperately in his daughter's hands. He saw the rumpled apron, the crooked headband, and the sheer, paralyzing terror in the housemaid's expressive eyes.

And then, his dark, observant gaze dropped.

Mason’s eyes settled briefly on Lila’s midsection. He stared at the small, undeniable pregnancy bump that was now visibly pressing against the fabric of her black dress, a secret she had managed to conceal under loose aprons for months.

The realization struck the mafia boss with the force of a detonating bomb. The pieces of the puzzle slammed together in his calculating mind.

He slowly lifted his head. The absolute stillness of his muscular, masculine frame was infinitely more dangerous than any outburst of rage. He met Lila’s eyes.

The transition was terrifying. The calm, composed host was instantly replaced by the ruthless, cold-blooded king of the syndicate. A dark, absolute void of lethal intent flooded his gaze.

"Lila," Mason said.

His deep voice echoed loudly in the dead-silent foyer. He paused after her name, a measured, agonizing silence that hung in the bright air like an executioner's blade. He kept his cold, unwavering gaze locked entirely on the exhausted, trembling maid.

"Our baby?" Mason asked.
