Chapter 2

The festive strings of holiday music drifted out from the ballroom, a cruel soundtrack to the devastating extortion happening in the foyer. Lila leaned against the cold marble wall, her protective hand still resting firmly against the curve of her stomach. The sheer physical and emotional exhaustion of carrying this secret was finally crushing her.

"Pick up the bag," Camille ordered, adjusting her emerald satin gown with an air of absolute finality. "The driver is waiting. If Mason sees you looking like this, it will raise questions I do not have the patience to answer tonight."

Before Lila could reach for the leather handle, a soft, urgent sound interrupted the standoff.

"Auntie Camille?" a small voice called out.

From the sweeping staircase, six-year-old Piper Vale descended the carpeted steps. The little girl was dressed impeccably in a red velvet Christmas dress, her fair, rosy cheeks flushed with innocent determination. She possessed her father's dark hair and sharp, observant eyes, but her spirit was completely untouched by the violence of the mafia world. Over the past year, Piper had found unwavering comfort in the gentle housemaid, adopting Lila as the maternal figure she desperately craved.

Piper walked directly toward the two women. In her small hands, she tightly clutched a heavy, pink ceramic piggy bank. She had been hiding on the landing, and she had heard the terrifying exchange.

Lila’s eyes widened in panic. "Piper, sweetie, go back upstairs. Please."

Piper ignored the warning. She stepped right up to the mafia boss's fiancée. The six-year-old girl lifted her small arms, carefully offering the heavy piggy bank toward Camille. She looked earnestly at the towering woman in the emerald gown, her innocent mind attempting to solve an adult nightmare with a child's logic.

"Auntie," Piper pleaded, her clear American accent echoing softly in the grand foyer. "Can my pennies buy Mommy's baby?"

The childish words hit the air with the devastating force of a physical blow. The absolute, unvarnished innocence of the question laid bare the monstrous nature of Camille's transaction. The word "Mommy" echoed off the gilded mirrors, a title Piper had bestowed upon the maid months ago, much to Camille's absolute disgust.

Camille stared down at the pink ceramic pig. Her fair skin paled slightly beneath her flawless makeup. For a microscopic second, the polished, elegant public manner she maintained fractured.

"What did you just say?" Camille hissed, her voice a venomous whisper as she looked at the little girl.

"I have a lot of pennies," Piper insisted, shaking the heavy bank so the coins rattled loudly. "You don't have to sell her baby to the strangers. I can pay you."

"Shut your mouth, you little brat," Camille snapped, her composure slipping dangerously. She reached out, prepared to snatch the ceramic toy from the child's hands and smash it against the marble floor. "Get back upstairs before I lock you in your room for the rest of the week."

"Do not speak to her," a deep, controlled voice rumbled from the edge of the foyer.

The air in the room suddenly turned to ice.
