Chapter 1

“You did this to a child. Whatever happens now, you brought it on yourselves.”
Gloria stopped moving beneath the collapsed storage boxes.
I did not shout.
That frightened her more.
Camille stood several feet behind me with Noah pressed securely against her chest. My son was screaming hard enough to turn red, and every sound stripped another layer from whatever restraint I had left.
Then Gloria’s coat vibrated.
Once.
Twice.
A phone.
Her face changed.
I noticed.
Camille noticed too.
Gloria immediately reached toward her pocket.
I got there first.
“Don’t.”
She froze.
I removed the phone.
The screen was already unlocked.
A live call had been running for eleven minutes.
No name.
Only one letter.
E.
I lifted the phone.
Someone on the other end disconnected.
Gloria whispered, “Dante, give me that.”
Wrong priority.
Her grandson had just been pulled from a washing machine, and she wanted her phone.
I looked at the screen.
There were three recent videos.
LAUNDRY.
NURSERY.
BOTTLE.
My stomach tightened.
I opened LAUNDRY.
The recording had started before Camille entered.
Gloria appeared on-screen carrying Noah.
She looked toward the camera.
Then deliberately laid my son inside the inactive washer.
Afterward she stepped backward.
And waited.
Not panic.
Not madness.
Preparation.
I stopped the video.
Camille whispered:
“Oh my God.”
Gloria tried to stand.
“You don’t understand.”
I looked at her.
“No.”
My voice dropped.
“But I understand enough to know this was staged.”
Her face went white.
Then I opened the message attached to the video.
One sentence.
WHEN VIVIENNE COMES BACK, LET HER FIND HIM FIRST.
My breathing stopped.
This had never been about punishing Noah.
May you like
Gloria wanted my wife to discover him there.
And whatever happened next had been designed to make Vivienne look responsible.
