Chapter 5

The secret was not about Vivienne.

Not really.

It was about me.

Elias believed I had married her under false circumstances.

He claimed my late father arranged our first meeting.

That part was true.

I knew.

Vivienne did not.

We met four years earlier at a charity dinner neither of us wanted to attend.

I thought coincidence put us at the same table.

My father had arranged the seating.

Why?

Because the Bellaro and Mercer families were close to war over two eastern routes.

My father believed marriage could prevent it.

He never told me.

Elias had known.

Gloria too.

Vivienne stared at me when I told her.

We were in our bedroom.

No Gloria.

No Elias.

Just us.

“You knew?”

“After our third date.”

Her face changed.

“And you didn’t tell me?”

“No.”

That failure belonged to me.

I had convinced myself the arrangement stopped mattering once the relationship became real.

Love made the origin irrelevant.

Convenient.

For me.

Not for her.

Vivienne turned away.

“So my mother was right.”

“No.”

She looked back sharply.

“About what?”

“That powerful families hide choices and call it protection.”

The words hurt because they were accurate.

I sat.

“I should have told you.”

“Yes.”

No comfort.

Good.

Then she whispered:

“Did you marry me for the routes?”

“No.”

“Would you have met me without them?”

“I don’t know.”

Truth.

Her eyes filled.

Our marriage had been real.

Its beginning had been manipulated.

Both could exist.

Then she told me something else.

Her mother knew Vivienne had discovered the original arrangement six months ago.

Gloria begged her not to confront me.

Said telling me would destabilize both families.

Vivienne waited.

She hated herself for it.

Then Noah came.

And suddenly she became afraid of what every hidden family bargain might mean for her son.

That was when Gloria began telling her she was tired.

Confused.

Emotional.

The psychological campaign had started immediately after Vivienne began asking questions.

Not after childbirth.

Childbirth merely gave Gloria a useful excuse.
