Chapter 16

Lucas earned unsupervised breakfast with Theo before he earned a full day.
That was deliberate.
Small trust.
Repeatable.
He showed up early.
Every time.
Never brought expensive gifts.
Good.
Theo made him pancakes shaped like something allegedly resembling boats.
Lucas ate them.
Also brave.
One morning I arrived early enough to hear Theo ask:
“Dad, you still owe money?”
Lucas paused.
“Yes.”
“Then what?”
“I work.”
“Then?”
“I pay it.”
Theo thought.
“No me?”
Lucas’s voice broke.
“No you.”
That was the whole repair in two words.
No you.
Adult problems stay with adults.
I left before they saw me.
Not every emotional moment requires a matriarch standing in the doorway.
I was learning that too.
My leadership had always leaned toward intervention.
Protect.
Correct.
Decide.
Useful qualities.
Dangerous if they become identity.
Theo needed me to save him at the marina.
He did not need me to control every step afterward.
Lucas needed consequence.
He also needed room to become better without performing improvement for my approval.
That was harder for me than I expected.
May you like
Maybe because control is seductive even when used for protection.
The difference lies in knowing when to release it.
