Chapter 14

Miranda and I ended the marriage.
Quietly.
No public humiliation.
No staged betrayal.
She had tried to remove my children from me.
There was no marriage after that.
Love could remain in fragments.
Trust did not.
She moved into a separate home.
No Ferrante role.
No household authority.
She was permitted contact with the children only when they requested and when I was comfortable.
At first, Tess asked often.
Then less.
Milo rarely.
Nora sometimes wrote little notes.
Miranda accepted the unevenness.
That was part of consequence.
Gavin hated her for “choosing my side.”
She finally laughed at him.
“There are no sides.”
Good.
Then:
“There are things I did.”
Better.
Gavin never understood that.
He kept describing himself as betrayed by Vincent.
As though being lower in the conspiracy hierarchy erased voluntarily throwing the first punch while children were tied to luggage.
It didn’t.
Arthur eventually apologized to the kids too.
Milo asked why his new name was Michael.
Arthur said:
“It was my father’s name.”
Milo frowned.
“I like Milo.”
“So do I.”
Good answer.
Nora asked why Natalie.
Arthur said he chose it because it sounded normal.
She looked offended.
“My name normal.”
I almost laughed.
Tess did not care.
She had discovered ducks.
Children reclaim scale better than adults.
The three suitcases remained in storage for months because I could not decide what to do with them.
Burning felt theatrical.
Keeping felt worse.
Finally Milo asked why we still had them.
I told him.
He said:
“Suitcases for trips.”
Simple.
So we removed the false bottoms.
Removed the fake tags.
May you like
Cleaned them.
And waited.
