Chapter 12

Vincent lost everything that required trust.
No council seat.
No estate access.
No contact with my children.
No authority over crews.
His personal property remained.
His life remained.
His opinions remained, unfortunately.
Arthur lost access too.
Different path.
He had participated.
He also told truths that broke the plan.
That did not erase guilt.
It changed consequence.
Gavin was removed from every Ferrante operation.
Miranda asked what would happen to our marriage.
I did not answer immediately.
That surprised her.
“You’re not ending it?”
“I didn’t say that.”
Her face fell.
I needed time.
Not because I wanted reconciliation.
Because my children had known Miranda as mother-like presence for eighteen months.
Any decision needed to separate marital consequence from their emotional reality.
Then Milo answered part of it for me.
He asked:
“Miranda bad?”
I sat with him.
“She did something very wrong.”
“Why?”
“She wanted something and convinced herself hurting you a little would help her get it.”
He frowned.
“We were scared big.”
Exactly.
Adults always underestimate harm when they are not the body being moved.
“Does she live here?”
“Not now.”
He thought.
“Can she say sorry?”
“If you want.”
He did.
Nora did too.
Tess asked for Miranda constantly.
Harder.
Eventually Miranda met them in the garden.
No touching until they chose.
She apologized without explaining away.
Milo asked:
“You said Dad didn’t want us.”
Miranda cried.
“I lied.”
“Why?”
“Because I wanted you to go without fighting.”
He looked at me.
Then back at her.
“That was mean.”
“Yes.”
Nora asked:
“Did Dad know van?”
“No.”
“Did Dad pick names?”
“No.”
Good.
The children needed those answers more than they needed adult strategy.
Tess eventually hugged Miranda.
Milo did not.
Nora held her hand for five seconds.
Different children.
May you like
Different boundaries.
I refused to make them match.
