Chapter 14

Evelina and I met again four years after the broken vase.
Charity dinner.
Different house.
She was not alone.
Neither was I.
We spoke briefly.
“You look well.”
“So do you.”
Polite.
Then she said:
“I used to think you ending the engagement proved I was right.”
“About what?”
“That origins matter.”
I waited.
“Then I realized you ended it because of what I did after spending years hiding my origins.”
Exactly.
She had separated rejection from shame.
Important.
“Are you happy?”
She thought.
“Mostly.”
Good answer.
“Orla?”
“Terrifying.”
She smiled.
“I’m glad.”
Then:
“Do you still have the vase?”
“Storage.”
Evelina laughed.
“Of course.”
No symbol.
Just porcelain.
We parted.
