Chapter 5

The silence in the grand dining hall was absolute, a suffocating vacuum that absorbed the soft, elegant warmth of the crystal chandeliers. The tall ivory candles continued to burn steadily, their reflections shimmering in the gilded ceiling moldings.
Camille gripped the edge of the polished walnut table, her knuckles turning white. She realized that arguing against the visible trauma of the dog and the ruined appearance of the maid was a losing battle, so she attempted to pivot, aiming to leverage her authority as the future matriarch of the household.
"Maxwell, this is highly inappropriate," Camille stated, her American accent clipping sharply. "We can discuss the clumsiness of an old dog in private. We have guests."
"Are my guests offended by the pursuit of the truth in my own home?" Maxwell asked the silent room. Not a single man or woman moved or breathed a word in response.
He turned his focus back to the beautiful housemaid standing by his side.
The camera angle shifted to a tight close-up of Ada.
Ada was still standing near the water bowl, her sophisticated black maid dress clinging damply to her slender legs. She looked past the dark fabric of her employer's tailored suit, looking directly at Maxwell. The fair, rosy skin of her cheeks was pale. She had been terrified into silence by Camille in the past, threatened in the shadows of the mansion, but feeling the heavy, reassuring presence of the Mafia boss crouching beside the dog gave her a sudden, desperate surge of courage.
She looked at Baxter's paws, which she had frantically untied on the muddy riverbank just minutes before. The memory of the cruel nylon rope fueled her resolve.
Ada looked directly at Maxwell. She gathered enough breath to finish her confession.
Tears collected heavily along her lower eyelids, shining in the golden light, but she refused to let them fall. Her words remained impossibly clear, breaking the silence of the room with devastating precision.
“His paws were tied.”
The absolute, terrifying implication of the housemaid's words crashed over the dining hall. Camille had not just lied about the dog wandering away; she had actively, maliciously orchestrated the drowning of a helpless animal.
A collective gasp swept through the seated guests. In the violent, unpredictable world of the American Mafia, violence against rivals was expected. But the calculated, sadistic torture of a beloved family pet was an act of psychopathic cruelty that sickened even the hardened syndicate members.
Camille’s fair, rosy skin drained entirely of color. Her eyes widened in sheer, unadulterated panic. She looked wildly around the table, desperately seeking a single ally among the dozens of powerful syndicate members, but the faces staring back at her were stony and unforgiving.
"She is lying!" Camille shrieked, her voice pitching up into a hysterical, defensive frequency. She pointed a shaking, diamond-clad finger at the housemaid. "She is a manipulative, lying servant! She tied him up herself to make herself look like a hero! She wants you to turn against me!"

"Do you believe a woman who plunges into freezing water to save a life possesses the heart to endanger it first?" Maxwell asked softly.
The volume of his voice dropped into a register of pure, concentrated ice. The deeply masculine, terrifying Mafia boss became preternaturally still.
