Chapter 2

The sharp, sickening sound of Helena’s hand striking the child's face hung in the bright, sunlit air. The sheer violence of the act, committed in front of the entire upper echelon of the Bellini family, shattered the illusion of their civilized Sunday dinner. Ava spun from the impact, a heartbreaking cry tearing from her throat as she recoiled in her chair.
Matteo’s reaction was instantaneous and explosive. The cold, calculating demeanor of the veteran Mafia boss vanished, replaced by the primal, blinding instinct of a father protecting his blood.
He moved with terrifying speed, his polished leather shoes scraping aggressively against the floorboards. Matteo immediately tore Helena’s hand away from the child, his grip on his mother's wrist like an industrial vice. With a forceful, sweeping motion, he pulled Ava safely behind his broad, tailored frame, shielding her entirely from the matriarch.
"Daddy!" Ava sobbed, her tiny hands clutching the back of Matteo’s dark suit jacket. She buried her tear-stained, rosy face against his leg, speaking between ragged, terrified hiccups. "Daddy… Grandma said never tell you. She said it was a secret."
Dominic abruptly rose from his chair on the opposite side of the table. The heavy mahogany legs of his seat shrieked against the floor. His fair face was entirely drained of color, his eyes wide with sudden, unadulterated panic. The wine glass he had been holding tipped over, spilling dark red liquid across the pristine white linen tablecloth like a spreading pool of blood.
"Matteo, listen to me," Dominic stammered, his American accent cracking under the immense, suffocating pressure of the room. "The girl is confused. She doesn't understand what she's saying. Children repeat nonsense all the time."
"Do not speak," Matteo commanded. The volume of his deep, raspy voice barely rose above a whisper, yet it possessed a paralyzing, lethal authority that forced every capo and family member at the table to freeze in place.
Matteo kept his large hand protectively over his daughter. His cold, intimidating eyes locked onto his cousin. He could see the micro-expressions of guilt dancing across Dominic’s face. He could see the way Dominic’s eyes darted toward the grand double doors leading out of the dining room.
"She is a child," Matteo continued, measuring every single syllable with cold, terrifying precision. "A child who does not know how to invent the concept of a new father. A child who does not comprehend the concept of my permanent absence."
Dominic began backing away from the table, taking slow, hesitant steps toward the doorway. His expensive leather shoes felt heavy, his mind racing for an exit strategy that did not exist.

Helena, recovering from the shock of Matteo’s intervention, looked at Dominic in absolute panic. She silently, frantically shook her head, her elaborate jewelry rattling against her collarbone, silently begging him not to run and confirm their treason.
"It is a misunderstanding, Matteo!" Helena shrieked, desperately trying to reclaim control. "You are letting a toddler destroy this family!"
