Chapter 6

Natalie escaped the hidden room on the fourth night.
That came from Keller.
She had helped.
Not bravely.
Desperately.
“I left the cleaning latch loose.”
I looked at her.
“Why?”
“Because I heard Mrs. Moretti begging me through the wall.”
She cried when she admitted it.
Not because she expected punishment.
Because she had lived three years believing four days of delay made her guilty of everything after.
Natalie came out after midnight.
Took food.
A coat.
The blue bracelet.
Then disappeared through an old service gate.
“Why didn’t she come to me?”
Keller looked ashamed.
“She thought you were part of it.”
That hurt exactly where it should.
“Why?”
“Because Vivienne showed her messages.”
I turned.
Vivienne said nothing.
“What messages?”
Damian closed his eyes.
There.
Forged messages.
Supposedly from me.
Keep Natalie isolated.
Do not let Audrey become involved.
If she causes another scene, move her.
My language.
My tone.
Not my words.
I stared at Vivienne.
“You studied me.”
She looked away.
I understood then.
This had not worked because they were brilliant.
It worked because I was predictable.
Cold when angry.
Brief in messages.
Comfortable delegating security.
A forged order sounded like me because too many real orders already arrived without context.
Natalie believed the worst version of me because the structure around me made it plausible.
That part was mine.
Not her captivity.
Not the lies.
But the house where no one questioned a frightening instruction carrying my name?
Mine.
I sat down.
Mrs. Keller whispered:
“She loved you.”
I looked at her.
“She also feared you.”
Harder truth.
May you like
Both could exist.
And someone had used the second to destroy the first.
