Chapter 11

Vivienne’s marriage to me had been part ambition, part insurance.

Natalie explained.

Before her disappearance, Vivienne had already been close to the household.

Afterward, she became helpful.

Organized Audrey’s care.

Managed condolences.

Handled events.

Comforted me.

I mistook proximity during grief for loyalty.

Then affection grew.

Maybe some of it was real.

That was the ugly part.

People can love someone they manipulate.

Vivienne admitted it when I confronted her.

“I did love you.”

Natalie laughed bitterly.

Vivienne looked at her.

“I did.”

Natalie replied:

“You loved the version of him who never knew what you did.”

Silence.

Perfect.

I looked at Vivienne.

“Why marry me?”

Her eyes filled.

“Because by then I wanted the life.”

Not only power.

Life.

House.

Name.

Me.

Audrey too, in some twisted way.

She had helped create Natalie’s disappearance, then stepped into the space it left until she convinced herself the replacement was legitimate.

“You thought enough time would turn theft into ownership.”

She looked away.

Damian’s motive was simpler.

Power.

Security.

Independent crews.

Access.

Matteo wanted structural control.

Vivienne wanted a life she could only have if Natalie stayed gone.

Different motives.

Same victim.

I removed them from the estate.

Not with spectacle.

Access ended.

Damian lost command.

Matteo lost routes.

Vivienne lost the house, ring, household authority, and any access to Audrey.

She asked:

“Forever?”

I looked at Natalie.

Then Audrey.

“Not your decision anymore.”

Neither mine alone.

That mattered.

Vivienne had spent years deciding where other women and children were allowed to exist.

Now choice returned to the people she tried to erase.
