Chapter 12

The stolen holdings came back under Moretti control.

That part was easy.

Trust was harder.

Natalie did not move into our bedroom.

She took a guest suite.

Audrey slept there the first week.

I hated how relieved that made me.

At least they were home.

Then I corrected myself.

Natalie was not home because I wanted the word.

She was in the estate because she chose to try.

Different.

Important.

Some nights we talked.

Not about love.

Evidence.

Timeline.

Who said what.

Which lie landed.

Where I failed.

I learned things about myself I did not enjoy.

I rarely explained decisions.

I expected trust without context.

I treated fear like disobedience.

Natalie once told me she was afraid of Damian’s growing influence.

I said I had it handled.

She heard dismissal.

I meant reassurance.

Intent did not repair effect.

“You made it easy for them to use your voice,” she said.

I nodded.

That surprised her.

No defense.

“They forged orders because real orders already sounded cold enough to believe.”

I hated the truth.

Still truth.

She looked at me.

“You’ve changed.”

“No.”

I thought.

“Maybe I’m changing.”

Better.

Audrey interrupted by running into the room with both blue bracelets looped around her fingers.

“Match!”

Natalie smiled.

I did too.

For Audrey, the bracelets meant Mommy came back.

For us, they meant everything we failed to ask before believing the worst.

Same object.

Different weight.
