Chapter 7

After Anna died, I took over.

Not officially.

Emotionally.

Milo cried at night.

I came.

He refused food.

I sat with him.

Caleb disappeared into work because grief made the house unbearable.

I judged him.

Quietly.

Probably too quickly.

When he came home late, Milo was already asleep beside my chair or upstairs with the nanny.

Days became months.

A pattern formed.

I became safe.

Caleb became occasional.

Nobody designed it.

That does not mean nobody contributed.

I looked at him.

“You should have stayed.”

He laughed bitterly.

“I couldn’t breathe here.”

“Then you should have taken Milo sometimes.”

“Every time I tried, he cried for you.”

“And you stopped trying.”

His face tightened.

Yes.

That was the part he owned.

Then I looked at myself.

“And I let you.”

Silence.

Elise looked surprised.

Good.

I had no interest in protecting my pride just because villains existed in the room.

Caleb stared at me.

“What?”

“I thought Milo choosing me meant I was helping.”

Maybe I was.

Also, maybe I enjoyed being needed after losing Anna.

That was harder to admit.

My daughter was gone.

Her son reached for me.

I held tighter.

Love can become possession quietly when grief is involved.

None of that excused a cut saddle.

None excused what they did to Milo.

But if I wanted the cycle to end, I had to stop pretending only their motives mattered.

“You still tried to make me fall.”

“Yes.”

“You still let Elise terrorize your son into silence.”

His face broke.

“I didn’t know she’d use the horse.”

Elise turned.

“Don’t.”

Caleb looked at her.

“What?”

“Don’t pretend you wanted him handled gently.”

There.

Another crack.

She continued.

“You said scare him enough that he stops talking.”

Caleb went completely still.

Milo’s father had not planned the stall.

He had authorized fear.

Different detail.

Same betrayal.

I looked at him.

“Did you?”

He whispered:

“Yes.”

That answer cost him more than any denial would have.

Good.

Now we had something real to work with.

May you like

Not today.

But maybe eventually.
