Chapter 16

Victor returned two months later.

Not to council.

To breakfast.

My invitation.

He arrived without a family ring.

I noticed.

He noticed me noticing.

Neither commented.

Ruby was coloring at the table.

Milo was eating fruit on his perch.

Dana no longer prepared my private meals, but she supervised the breakfast staff from the open kitchen. No secrets. No closed pantry conversations.

Victor stopped when Ruby saw him.

She looked at me first.

I nodded.

Her choice.

“Uncle Victor.”

His face tightened.

“Hi, Ruby.”

She returned to coloring.

No hug.

No fear.

Good.

Victor sat across from me.

I poured coffee.

He watched.

“So we’re doing this?”

“Breakfast?”

He almost smiled.

“That too.”

We sat quietly for a while.

Then he said, “I started seeing Mom differently.”

I knew what he meant.

The old stories.

The days she ate alone.

The closed doors.

The silence my father called illness.

Victor continued.

“I think I copied him.”

“Dad?”

“Yes.”

I waited.

“He made resentment feel like proof you deserved something.”

That was true.

Victor looked at me.

“I spent years thinking being overlooked meant being wronged.”

“What do you think now?”

He exhaled.

“Sometimes it means somebody else was better.”

That was painful for him to say.

I respected it.

Not rewarded.

Respected.

Ruby slid a drawing across the table toward him.

Three people.

Me.

Her.

A bird.

Victor looked at it.

“Where am I?”

Ruby shrugged.

“Not yet.”

I almost choked on my coffee.

Victor laughed.

Real laugh.

First one I had heard from him in years.

“Fair.”

That was more honest than forced reconciliation.

Not yet.

Maybe later.

Maybe never.

But choice belonged to her.

Not blood.

Not hierarchy.

Not old promises.

Milo shuffled along the perch and said in my father’s voice:

“Victor gets the chair.”

Victor froze.

Then the bird continued:

“Until Julian is ready.”

Victor closed his eyes.

This time, he laughed.

Not bitterly.

Finally.

May you like

“Yeah,” he said.

“I heard you.”
