Chapter 15

Ruby became afraid of coffee.

Not drinking it.

Seeing me drink it.

The first morning after everything changed, I lifted a fresh cup and she immediately reached across the table.

“No.”

I stopped.

Her eyes went to Milo.

Then the cup.

Then me.

I put it down.

“Okay.”

She climbed onto the chair beside mine.

“Bird check.”

I almost laughed.

Instead I turned the cup toward Milo.

He looked at it.

Then scratched his wing.

“Safe?” Ruby asked.

Milo said nothing.

She frowned.

“Bird bad job.”

That made me laugh.

First time in days.

I picked up the cup again.

Ruby grabbed my sleeve.

The fear was real.

So I put it down.

Not because the coffee was unsafe.

Because she was.

Different problem.

“What do you need?”

She thought.

Then pointed at the kitchen.

“Dana.”

Interesting.

Dana came in slowly.

Ruby looked at her.

“You make?”

Dana’s face changed.

“Yes.”

“No blue?”

Her eyes filled.

“No blue.”

Ruby studied her.

Then nodded.

I drank.

Small sip.

Ruby watched my face.

“Good?”

“Good.”

She relaxed.

That was healing in houses like mine.

Not speeches.

A child watching a father drink coffee and learning the morning does not end badly.

Dana cried after she left the room.

I let her.

Victor did not visit.

Also good.

He sent Ruby a stuffed parrot.

I returned it.

Not cruelly.

Too soon.

He understood.

Weeks passed.

Milo became even more unbearable because everyone started listening whenever he opened his beak.

Most of what he said was useless.

“Close the door.”

“Where’s my shoe?”

“Victor, sit down.”

Old fragments.

Old ghosts.

Then one afternoon he repeated my mother.

Her voice.

Soft.

“Julian, be kind without being weak.”

I froze.

I had forgotten she used to say that.

Not to me.

To my father.

The bird had remembered.

I stood beside his perch for a long time.

Maybe my mother had not lost completely.

Maybe some lessons survive too.

May you like

Not because families preserve them.

Because someone hears.
